Decelerator another Debutante for Lukas

Westrock Stables' DECELERATOR (Dehere) gave Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas a seventh victory in Churchill Downs' $111,300 Debutante S. (G3) on Saturday, rallying from slightly off the pace in the stretch and gradually wearing down second choice Wild Forest Cat (D'wildcat) to prevail by a neck as the 6-5 favorite under Julien Leparoux. The popular choice returned $4.60, $3 and $2.40 while topping the $17.20 exacta, $65 trifecta and $544.60 superfecta (8-3-1-7).

Decelerator found herself stalking the pace as Brown Eyed Baby (Mineshaft) and Wild Forest Cat traded the lead through splits of :21 3/5 and :45 1/5. The former fell back quickly at the top of the stretch as Decelerator moved up to engage Wild Forest Cat, who bravely continued to fight through the stretch along the inside. Bumps were exchanged between the two, which led to a claim of foul against the winner by jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. aboard the runner-up, but the claim was disallowed as the head-on view showed Wild Forest Cat initiating most of the contact. The final time for six furlongs over the fast track was 1:11 1/5.

Wild Forest Cat, at 4-1, was 3 3/4 lengths clear for second and paid $3.80 and $3.20. Third was 5-1 fourth choice Kinsolving (Posse), who made a decent recovery following a slow start and gave back $3.60. Six lengths further back, and completing the superfecta, was 23-1 longshot Tidal Pool (Yankee Gentleman), who was followed under the line by Phone Marybe (Officer), Send Rose Thecheck (Buddha), Brown Eyed Baby, Henry's Posse (Posse) and Our Tekela Rose (Kela).

A $250,000 OBS two-year-old-in training purchase this past February, Decelerator was a half-length winner of her Churchill debut going five furlongs in the mud on May 14. Second that day was Hot Dixie Chick (Dixie Union), who came back to break her maiden on June 13 by 5 3/4 lengths in a track-record :56.48 going five furlongs. Bred in Kentucky by Ted O'Neill, Decelerator has now bankrolled $95,671 from her two victories.

Decelerator is the first foal out of Paris Rose (Accelerator), who is also the dam of a yearling colt by Harlan's Holiday. Paris Rose, a half-sister to Grade 1 queen Fabulously Fast (Deputy Minister), was produced from the Grade 1 winner Fabulous Notion (Somethingfabulous), herself a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Cacoethes (Alydar). This is also the family of 1998 champion turf mare Fiji (GB) (Rainbow Quest) and multiple Grade 1 winner Subordination (Mt. Livermore).

Lukas, who already held the record for most Debutante wins among trainers, also trained Burnished Bright (1986), Ice Folly (1989), Golden Attraction (1995), Love Lock (1997), Be Gentle (2003) and Classic Elegance (2004) to victory in the Churchill spring meet's premier event for juvenile fillies.
