Well Armed out with ankle chip

Well Armed has been sidelined with a bone chip (Benoit Photos)

Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) winner WELL ARMED (Tiznow) was reported by Daily Racing Form to have a bone chip in his left front ankle, perhaps accounting for his last-place finish in the San Diego H. (G2) last Sunday.

Trainer Eoin Harty said the six-year-old would have surgery in the next few days at Alamo Pintado Equine Clinic in Solvang, California, within the next few days. The surgery will sideline him for Del Mar's Pacific Classic (G1) on September 6 and perhaps for the rest of the year.

Well Armed, owned by WinStar Farm, was reported well immediately following the San Diego, his first start since his sensational 14-length victory in the Dubai World Cup on March 28.

The gelding was a three-time stakes winner in 2008, with victories in the Goodwood S. (G1), San Diego H. and San Antonio H. (G2), and also placed last season in the Pacific Classic and Dubai World Cup.

His record currently stands at 24-7-4-1, $5,179,805.
