The Mailet strikes in Miesque

The Mailet is now two-for-two on the turf (Benoit Photos) J W Singer LLC's THE MAILET (Rock Hard Ten) came wide into the stretch of Sunday's $100,000 Miesque S. (G3) at Hollywood Park and mowed down the leaders to earn her second straight turf victory in as many tries for trainer Bruce Levine. Ridden by Joel Rosario for the first time, the juvenile filly was a half-length clear on the line while stopping the clock in 1:35 for one mile. Camille C (Roman Dancer) shot to the front when the gates opened, setting an opening quarter of :23 2/5, but her pacesetting duties were short-lived as Forbidden Paradise (Ire) (Chineur) ranged up to challenge on the outside. Connie and Michael (Roman Ruler) was running in tandem and outside of that one, who poked her head in front through a half-mile in :47. Camille C couldn't keep pace with her challengers and began backing up, leaving Connie and Michael to wrest the advantage away from Forbidden Paradise through six furlongs in 1:11 1/5 and seven furlongs in 1:23 1/5. All the while, The Mailet, who broke in and bumped with Jules J (Action This Day) at the start, was biding her time in midpack while running just off the rail. Rosario angled her out and the pair came wide around the turn, but the dark bay filly's momentum was just too much for her rivals. The Mailet overhauled Connie and Michael while easily holding a rallying In the Slips (More Than Ready) to second on the wire.

The Mailet rewarded her supporters with payouts of $25.40, $9.40 and $6 as the 11-1 sixth pick in the eight-filly field. In the Slips, who raced next to last in the early going, put in a game run to take down second as the 5-2 second choice. She returned $5 and $3.40 while ending the $49.60 exacta ($1). Connie and Michael finished another half-length back in third, worth $3 as the 2-1 favorite, and completed the $225 trifecta ($1). Camille C rounded out the top four as the 23-1 longest shot on the board, and capped the 4-7-6-2 superfecta ($1) that paid $1,722.60.

Whispering Hush (El Corredor), Forbidden Paradise and Jules J followed the top four under the line. Full Mandate (Ire) (Acclamation) was eased in the stretch.

Bred in Kentucky by Wind Hill Farm, The Mailet brought $75,000 as a Keeneland September yearling last year. She is the first stakes scorer out of the winning Emerging Glory (Smarten), who has since produced a pair of fillies, a yearling named Impassionit (Include) and a weanling by Invasor (Arg). Emerging Glory is herself a daughter of dual Grade 3-placed To the Hunt (Relaunch), making her a half-sister to multiple Grade 1 queens Stellar Jayne (Wild Rush) and Starrer (Dynaformer). Also in the family are multiple Grade 2 heroine American Royale (American Standard) and Grade 3 victress American Border (Boundary), who captured the Miss Liberty S. and ran third in the Matchmaker S. this season.

The Mailet began her career running on dirt tracks in New York, but registered double-digit losses in her first two tries. Levine switched her to Belmont Park's turf on October 22, and the dark bay miss responded with an easy 1 1/2-length victory. Now two-for-two on the green, and owning an overall 4-2-0-0 mark, the juvenile lass boosted her earnings to $86,976.
