HOLLYWOOD NOTEBOOK

MAY 6, 2010

by John Mucciolo

A pair of grassy graded contests took center stage at Hollywood Park.

Wilshire H. (G3): Cecil and Reddam's MEDAGLIA D'AMOUR (Medaglia d'Oro) took command in early stretch and held a strong field at bay with relative ease in this one for Ben Cecil, winning her third race in succession. The surging four-year-old miss traveled one mile on the firm lawn in 1:34 1/5 beneath Alonso Quinonez.

Senorita S. (G3): Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Moss' homebred COZI ROSIE (Pleasantly Perfect) rallied from off the pace to inch clear late under Mike Smith. The John Sadler trainee crossed the line one-length ahead of her closest pursuer en route to stopping the teletimer in 1:35 for the one mile.

Track Stats

From a total of 36 races held over the Inglewood racetrack during the four-day race week, favorites won at a 42 percent clip and the top two betting choices combined for 53 percent of the wins. From 25 frays contested on the Cushion oval, seven animals won in wire-to-wire fashion (28 percent), while none of the 11 grassy tussles went all the way on the lead.

We saw four winners lead at every call on the main oval from seven races on Wednesday, but only three additional wire jobs from the remaining 18 races throughout the week. Outside posts fared best during the week, with the exception of Sunday, where all of the main-track winners broke from posts 1-6.

Speed on the lawn was far from great, with no grassy first-placers leading all the way.

HORSES TO WATCH

Wednesday (4/28)

5TH -- GOLDEN ITIZ (Tiznow) left little doubt as to who was best in this one with an authoritative, 11 1/4-length drubbing of her foes on this day. The Ron Ellis charge finished off her final five-sixteenths in a rapid :30 under moderate encouragement from Tyler Baze.

6TH -- LAURA BEASLEY (Walk that Walk) was a tad unlucky not to win this event and should be a strong contender for trainer Matthew Chew in future engagements.

Friday (4/30)

5TH -- SKY FOX (Sky Mesa) showed good speed and finished a creditable fourth here in a useful debut for trainer Bruce Headley. We expect big improvement next out for the sophomore.

Saturday (5/1)

1ST -- BURG BERG (Johannesburg) showed a lot of heart after being passed in here for conditioner Paco Gonzalez, just missing in a sharp runner-up showing. The four-year-old is always threat against this level.

4TH -- UNIONIZE (Dixie Union) had another solid race on his way back for Clifford Sise. The talented colt re-rallied late to be a solid second and could peak in his third start off the lengthy break next out.

6TH – PARTYWITHLARRYZ (Beau Genius) ran his second consecutive good one at this level and proved that he fits best with this type.

A Look Ahead

The $150,000 Mervyn LeRoy H. (G2) on Saturday and Sunday's $100,000 Railbird S. (G3) on Sunday are the graded races slated for the upcoming week at Hollywood.
