MONMOUTH NOTEBOOK JUNE 18, 2010 by Thomas Cassidy The 50-cent Pick 5 wager proved once again this week to be a valuable one as it paid $12,526 on Friday, $47,932.10 Saturday, and $1,404.85 Sunday. The multi-race bet is conducted over races 6-10 every racing day and is always worth a look. Beginning this past weekend, the Pick 5 will carry a $100,000 guaranteed pool on Saturdays and Sundays. Friday afternoon consisted of an 11-race card with three on the turf course. The main track was listed as good for the opener due to rain that hit the area on Thursday, but was shortly upgraded to fast in time for the 2ND race. Speed held well on the main track on Friday, but all three turf races contested over firm grass were won from off the pace. Each of the 11 races was won by a different outfit, but Paco Lopez was top jock on the day with three winners. There were three winning favorites on the afternoon, none of which came in the Pick 5 sequence. The public did not have the easiest of afternoons on Saturday, only correctly favoring two winners on the 12-race card. Dirt races were dominated by speed/stalking type runners. Two of the three turf races were won from off the pace with the lone speed winner being GET SERIOUS (City Zip) in the Monmouth S. (G3). Elvis Trujillo had the hot hand, taking three races on a day when every race was won by a different conditioner. Sunday's early daily double was taken by the powerful jockey/trainer combination of Jason Servis and Jose Lezcano. Those two have been immensely successful on the Jersey circuit and naturally a pair to keep an eye on. One winner they teamed up with was a Pennsylvania-bred first-time starter that paid a hefty $33.40. Lezcano also won a later race on the card, giving him the prize of top performer on Sunday. The main track played fair Sunday, and two of the three turf races were won by front-runners. The only closer to win on the green was a Patrick Biancone trainee, JUSTAROUDMIDNIGHT (Ire) (Danehill Dancer), who was making his American debut and had the services of Joe Bravo. That jockey/trainer combination is having a very successful meet. The betting public sharpened up a little on Sunday, favoring four winners on the 12-race card. ANGLES TO WATCH Runners exiting the 4TH race on May 23, a race won by repeat winner Adagio (GB) (Grand Lodge), are running back well and could be worth keeping an eye on in the future. It may be worth paying attention to claiming conditioners as the box saw plenty of action again this weekend with 31 runners changing hands. HORSES TO WATCH Sunday (6/13) 1ST -- BERT B DON (Harlan's Holiday) showed good speed from the inside post in his career debut and ran on gamely to the wire. 11TH -- COGNITO (Langfuhr) notched his second victory in a row. This colt is in very sharp form and was claimed out of both winning starts this meet.
