Indiano untouchable in Carry Back

Indiano cruised by three lengths in the Carry Back (Jim Lisa Photos)

Overcoming a very slight stumble at the start, Stud Al Agila's INDIANO (Indian Charlie) ultimately proved dominant in Saturday's $200,000 Carry Back S. (G2) at Calder. Sitting the catbird seat in third as Bulaga (Orientate) and Silver Cloud (Rahy) sped through fractions of :21 4/5 and :45 2/5, the 3-5 favorite inhaled that pair at the top of the stretch, dived toward the inside for the stretch run, and opened up to win the six-furlong test by three lengths in a time of 1:10 3/5 over the good main track. Ridden by Luis Saez, Indiano paid $3.40 and $2.20 with no show wagering available.

Smash (Smart Strike), the 2-1 second choice, trailed the quintet for the opening half-mile then closed to nab 7-2 third choice Cal Nation (Distorted Humor) for second by a length. It was 11 3/4 lengths back to Silver Cloud and a half-length farther back to Bulaga. Close It Out (Closing Argument) was scratched.

"I'm really pleased with him," trainer Marty Wolfson said. "He's muscled up and dappled up. I wasn't really concerned about the track condition. He loves slop if it had stayed that way. My only concern was that Smash didn't get the jump on him and that didn't happen. I'll probably take him to Saratoga for something next."

The two graded sprint stakes for three-year-olds at Saratoga are the August 1 Amsterdam S. (G2) at six furlongs and the August 27 King's Bishop S. (G1) at seven furlongs.

Voted the champion imported juvenile in Panama last year, Indiano left his adopted home a star after five consecutive victories by a combined margin of 31 lengths. Among his wins were a Group 2 and two Group 3s. Indiano suffered his first setback when second by a half-length against allowance foes at Gulfstream on March 20, but he returned two weeks later to finish second by two lengths in the Swale S. (G2). Unplaced for the first time when fifth in the Derby Trial S. (G3), Indiano rebounded to take the June 11 Unbridled S. at Calder by 4 1/4 lengths. His record now stands at 10-7-2-0, $235,336.

Bred in Kentucky by Diamond A Racing Corporation, Indiano was a $25,000 Keeneland September yearling. He was produced by Separata (Chi) (Sam M.), a Group 1 winner in her native Chile who later became a multiple stakes winner in the United States. She also placed in the Las Ciengas H. (G3), a race her daughter Separate Forest (Forestry) won on April 9. Separata has also reared the Grade 3-placed Quite the Lady (Pleasantly Perfect) and the minor stakes-placed Mr. Logan (Unbridled's Song).
