Nominees announced for Cartier Awards The nominations for the 21st Cartier Racing Awards, European horse racing's equivalent of the Oscars, were revealed Thursday. Established in 1991 to reward excellence in horseracing, the Cartier Awards are determined by points earned by horses in Pattern races throughout 2011, combined at the end of the season with the opinions of a panel of racing journalists and votes from readers of the Racing Post and The Daily Telegraph. There are eight equine awards for the year's top horses, including the coveted Cartier Horse of the Year. In addition, the Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award of Merit goes to the person or persons who, in the opinion of the special 17-strong Cartier Jury, has/have done the most for European racing and/or breeding either over their lifetime or within the past 12 months. The 2011 Cartier Racing Awards will be presented this year on the evening of November 15 during a ceremony before an invited audience of 300 at London's Dorchester Hotel. "We have been fortunate to witness some truly spectacular racing this year and the nominated horses for the Cartier Racing Awards have provided us with performances which will live long in the memory, " said Harry Herbert, Cartier's racing consultant. "I would like to thank the readers of the Racing Post and The Daily Telegraph for their votes and we are all looking forward to what will be a memorable evening at London's Dorchester Hotel on November 15."
