Rachel in foal to Bernardini

Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra is confirmed in foal to champion Bernardini, Stonestreet Farms announced via Twitter on Sunday. The tweet includes a photo from her scan.

Rachel Alexandra produced her first foal, a colt by two-time Horse of the Year and fellow Stonestreet star Curlin, on January 22.

Both were subsequently taken to Rood and Riddle Equine Clinic near Lexington, Kentucky, in an abundance of caution after Rachel Alexandra underwent post-partum pain management. Dam and foal were soon back at home at Stonestreeet.

Rachel Alexandra's Bernardini foal will sport three crosses of Northern Dancer in the fifth generation, as well as 5 x 5 duplication of Mr. Prospector.

Bernardini has now serviced female Horses of the Year in consecutive books. Zenyatta, Rachel Alexandra's rival for top honors in 2009, and the winner of the golden statuette in 2010, began her broodmare career at the court of Bernardini last year, and foaled her colt on March 8.
