Kantharos' first winner romps at Gulfstream

Stonestreet Stables' Katie's Kiss rolled to a 5 1/2-length score in Saturday's 3RD race at Gulfstream Park, becoming the first winner sired by undefeated Grade 2 hero Kantharos, who was himself a Stonestreet colorbearer.

Trained by David Fawkes, Katie's Kiss was making her second career start. She had run promisingly in her July 5 debut, crossing the wire in third, only to be disqualified for interference and demoted to seventh.

Katie's Kiss made no such mistake this time as the 7-2 second choice. New rider Ramsey Zimmerman hustled her along early, and the bay responded to take control through an opening quarter in :21 2/5 on the sloppy track. Katie's Kiss began to open up around the far turn and widened her margin down the lane. After reaching the half-mile split in :45 1/5, she completed the 4 1/2-furlong maiden special weight in :51 3/5.

Bred by Francis and Barbara Vanlangendonck in Florida, Katie's Kiss is a half-sister to stakes winner Stonestreet Song and to stakes-placed Truest Legend. They were produced by the winning Boston Harbor mare Sydney's Kiss, who is herself a half-sister to stakes scorers High Heritage and Exploited Storm.

Kantharos took the juvenile scene by storm in the summer of 2010. The son of Lion Heart crushed a Churchill Downs maiden by 11 3/4 lengths, overcame a stumble at the start to demolish the Bashford Manor by 9 1/2 lengths, and coasted to a 7 1/4-length tally in the Saratoga Special. Unfortunately, Kantharos sustained a career-ending injury at the conclusion of his ensuing workout. He earned $185,213 from his perfect three-race career.

A half-brother to Grade 3 victor Ikigai and to Grade 3-placed stakes winner Bonifacio, Kantharos is out of the winning Southern Halo mare Contessa Halo. This is the family of multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Jeranimo as well as First Samurai, a multiple Grade 1 star as a juvenile and now a sire.

The six-year-old Kantharos stands at Ocala Stud in Florida for $5,000, stands and nurses.
