TRACK BANDIT PREVIEWS
Sophomore fillies will line up for Saturday's $150,000 San Clemente H. (G2) at Del Mar, and ATTIMA (GB) (Zafonic) is the one to beat. The Julio Canani trainee rated kindly on the lead then responded nicely in the lane before cruising to a daylight victory as the odds-on favorite in the nine-furlong Honeymoon Breeders' Cup H. (G2) two back. In her most recent outing, she set the early tempo while in hand then inexplicably retreated to the back of the field in the 10-furlong American Oaks (G1). Attima worked five furlongs in a bullet :58 2/5 on Monday, which is a good omen that she will return to form. If so, she will be hard to deny. A pair of uncoupled fillies trained by James Cassidy -- SOOTHSAY (Ire) (Mujadil) and SOL MI FA (Ire) (Distant Music) -- are the primary threats. Despite losing to her stablemate in the Bay Meadows Breeders' Cup Oaks, Soothsay could be the better finisher. She was restrained along the inside, bullied her way through an opening turning for home, then was outfinished by three-quarters of a length that day. In her last start, Soothsay closed nicely for runner-up honors in the one-mile Flawlessly S. at Hollywood Park. Sol Mi Fa stalked from the outside then rallied nicely in the stretch to defeat her barnmate in the Bay Meadows Oaks. In her last start, she was restrained along the rail during the early stages of the American Oaks, then advanced along the inside before finishing a non-threatening fifth. If the top one falters, either of these two fillies could win. ARLENE (Game Plan) surged to the lead in midstretch before finishing a close second to Honeymoon runner-up Foxysox (GB) (Foxhound) in the one-mile Senorita S. (G3) two back. The dark bay is well drawn near the inside for a ground-saving trip and is a good one to use in the vertical exotics. TRUE AND TRUE (Is It True) has won two of her last three starts going 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf. She makes her stakes debut in this spot but is used to attending a fast early pace and may successfully stretch out for conditioner Wesley Ward. Canadian Grade 3-placed TASHA'S DELIGHT (Afternoon Deelites) finished a decent, troubled third in the Flawlessly last out. She is trained by Jeff Mullins and is another one to consider for the bottom of the trifecta. SECRET SCHEME (Precocity) is less than one length shy of being unbeaten in five starts. The Jerry Hollendorfer-trained filly closed well to capture her one and only turf start two back and was a widening 16-length winner going this distance on the main track at Bay Meadows in her most recent start. She figures to be in the mix early but has some class issues. HILL OF GRACE (GB) (Desert Prince) finished sixth in the Bay Meadows Oaks after setting the early pace, then sixth in the Flawlessly after breaking last. She would have to improve to factor here. MUSICAL HIGH (Ire) (Mozart [Ire]) ran third in both of her U.S. starts against lesser and would appear to be in over her head with some of these. LAKE MARINA (Meadowlake) broke her maiden on the main track two back and is probably overmatched.
