The Keeneland Foundation has volunteered to coordinate and administer a fund
that the Thoroughbred industry is setting up to benefit victims of the
Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami that hit multiple countries in southern Asia on
December 26. Proceeds from the fund will be given to Action Against Hunger and
Direct Relief International.
“The Thoroughbred industry is an international community,” Keeneland
President and CEO Nick Nicholson said. “This is our way of showing support for
the people of southern Asia and nearby countries as they deal with the aftermath
of this tragedy.”
According to the World Health Organization, up to five million people around
the stricken area are lacking in basic necessities such as clean water, shelter,
food and health care. Cash, checks and credit card donations will be accepted at
the sales counter at Keeneland during the upcoming January Horses of All Ages
Sale, which begins Monday and runs through Saturday. Consignors may also donate
a portion of the proceeds from their sale receipts and credit card donations can
be faxed to 859-288-4249.
WinStar Farm is establishing the fund with an a donation of $100,000.
