Supported like a "death and taxes" favorite in Saturday's Grade 3, $200,000

Greenwood Cup at Parx Racing, Jay Em Ess Stables's Redeemed had a few

anxious moments in the stretch before pulling out the expected victory in the 1

1/2-mile test, which serves as a prelude to the Grade 2 Breeders' Cup Marathon

in November.

Seizing control at the start under Ramon Dominguez, Redeemed held a

six-length lead through a quarter-mile in :24 3/5 and three-length advantage

after a half-mile in :49 1/5. However, going into the second of three turns,

11-1 chance Not Abroad began to apply pressure and would remain on Redeemed's

heels for the final seven furlongs.

After ticking off splits of 1:14 4/5, 1:39 4/5 and 2:03 3/5, Redeemed had to

dig deep in the final furlong to hold off a determined Not Abroad and passed the

wire a half-length in front. The final time for the little-used distance was a

track record 2:28. Redeemed, who is trained by Rick Dutrow, paid $2.20, $2.10

and $2.10 as the 1-10 favorite.

Not Abroad finished four lengths clear of Hello Lover, who raced in third

throughout. Completing the order of finish were Win Willy, Eversoul and

Doublethestyle. Birdun and Eldaafer were scratched.

After an initial debut setback, Redeemed won his next three starts before

finishing second in the Grade 2 Amsterdam and in the Smarty Jones at Parx Racing

last summer. He concluded his three-year-old campaign with back-to-back wins in

the Oklahoma Derby and Grade 3 Discovery Handicap.

Third in the Grade 1 Donn Handicap to kick off 2012, Redeemed was a

non-threatening sixth in the Grade 2 New Orleans Handicap next out. Suggesting

he was not a contender for older mare honors, Dutrow shifted Redeemed's focus to

marathon events. He won the off-the-turf Milesius at Belmont Park by 9 3/4

lengths going nine furlongs, and then romped by 10 lengths in the 1 1/2-mile

Grade 2 Brooklyn Handicap last time. With this victory, his record now stands at

13-8-2-2, $832,140.

Bred in Virginia by Morgan's Ford Farm, Redeemed was a $50,000 Fasig-Tipton

Midlantic September yearling. He is by Include, out of the Pleasant Tap mare

Early Mass, a half-sister to stakes winners The Texas Tunnel and Kris's Prayer.

Redeemed's third dam was Grade 3 winner Katonka, who produced multiple Grade

2 winners Talakeno and Give Me Strength. This is the extended family of Grade 1

Preakness winner Codex, Irish and French highweight Oratorio, and Japanese

champion Stinger.
