Wet weather finally

arrives at Lone Star

With the Breeders' Cup just over a week away, we at Brisnet

have decided to do a brief daily synopsis of what is going on at

Lone Star Park in an effort to keep all of the handicappers out

there up to speed on the weather, how the main track and turf

course are playing, and any other bits of information that may

prove useful in picking that elusive winner.

Rain finally fell Friday in Grand Prairie, Texas, forcing all

turf races to the main track on the evening's program, and was

very welcome following several weeks of little to no

precipitation. Saturday was mostly clear, but more wet weather is

expected over the next four days. Highs Sunday and Monday could

be in the mid-80s, but there is a 30 percent chance of showers on

Sunday and thunderstorms are predicted the following day with a

50 percent chance of rainfall. Cooler temperatures are expected

to follow the wet weather.

More rain remains possible later in the week, but Saturday's

early Breeders' Cup forecast calls for partly sunny skies with a

high of 73.

As for Lone Star itself, early speed was an asset over the

good main track Friday night as eight of 10 races were taken by

horses who were either first or second at the second call. The

two exceptions were both close to the pace on the backstretch.

Saturday featured a fast track and yielding turf. The main

track played fairer, with one winner in a six-furlong race

closing from last at the first call, and there was a near wire-to-wire

victory going a mile on the grass. The turf course has favored

closers most of the meet.
