For the first time, this year the “All Others” mutual field option was divided into two options – fillies and colts & geldings. The “All 3-Year-Old Fillies” (#23) selection rose from 30-1 on the morning-line to 66-1 by the time Pool 1 closed.
Game Winner (#6), undefeated hero of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) at Churchill Downs on November 2, was the only individual betting interest to close at single-digit odds in Pool. Opening at 8-1, the bay son of Candy Ride saw his odds drop to 5-1 by the time the first of four pools in the KDFW ended at 6 p.m. (ET) on Sunday.
Two other runners – Coliseum (#3) and Instagrand (#9) – registered the next lowest odds when bet down to 10-1. Coliseum, a gray son of Tapit who is stablemate to the Bob Baffert-trained Game Winner, opened at 15-1 on the morning line. He romped in his November 17 maiden debut at Del Mar by 6 3/4 lengths. Instagrand, from the Jerry Hollendorfer barn, is unbeaten from two lifetime efforts. The Into Mischief bay wired his maiden by 10 lengths at Los Alamitos on June 29 and was last seen taking the Best Pal Stakes (G2) at Del Mar in similar fashion by 10 1/4 lengths.
Total handle for Pool 1 of the KDFW was $258,389 ($186,470 in the Win pool and $71,919 in Exactas), which was a 3.2 percent increase from last year’s $250,259 ($177,103 in the Win pool and $73,156 in Exactas).
