Zayat Stables purchased a Medaglia d'Oro colt for a session-topping $500,000

at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale on Saturday. The dark bay was cataloged

as Hip No. 1592 and consigned by Eaton Sales, agent.

The colt hails from the immediate family of Canadian champion sprinter and

successful sire Langfuhr (Danzig), as well as multiple Canadian stakes winner

and stakes producer Princess Ruckus (Bold Ruckus). The yearling's dam, the

unraced Game Trick (Clever Trick), is a full sister to stakes victor Dakota's

Trick, and she has also produced the stakes-placed Twenty Eight Hours (Sky

Mesa).

A son of Maria's Mon, Hip 1371, brought the day's second-highest price of

$390,000 from RBTS for Sequoia Racing. The bay is the second registered foal

from the Lost Soldier mare She Nuit All, who is herself a half-sister to $1.6

million earner Octave (Unbridled's Song), heroine of last year's Coaching Club

American Oaks (G1) and Mother Goose S. (G1), as well as Grade 2-winning stakes

producer Belle Cherie (Belong to Me). The yearling was offered by Gainesway,

agent.

Three tied for the honor of being the session's top-selling fillies at

$310,000. Hip 1421, a daughter of Tiznow from the consignment of Denali Stud

(Craig and Holly Bandoroff), agent, went to Tom Gentry, agent. Out of the

unraced Troubling (Storm Cat), she is closely related to Iowa Derby hero Tiz Now

Tiz Then (Tiznow), who was third in the July 27 Jim Dandy S. (G2). Also

appearing under her first dam is the promising Irish two-year-old Maoineach (Congaree),

the winner of the August 31 Round Tower S. (Ire-G3) in her debut. The bay

filly's second dam is four-time Grade 1 star and millionaire Dispute (Danzig).

E. Paul Robsham Stable LLC went to $310,000 to buy a chestnut filly by More

Than Ready. Offered by Eaton Sales, agent for Overbrook Farm, Hip 1518 was

produced by the unraced Circle of Gold (Seeking the Gold), a full sister to

once-beaten champion Flanders (Seeking the Gold), who is herself the dam of

champion and $1.8 million earner Surfside (Seattle Slew). The youngster is a

half-sister to the multiple stakes-placed Chatham (Maria's Mon).

Rounding out the trio of fillies was Hip 1688, a Maria's Mon daughter who was

sold to John Brocklebank, agent, for $310,000. The chestnut is out of Miss Allen

(Allen's Prospect), making her a close relation of multiple Canadian stakes

winner Ice Bear (Maria's Mon), most recently fourth in the September 7 Woodbine

Mile (Can-G1). Miss Allen is a half-sister to multiple Canadian stakes queen

Bristol Pistol (Regal Classic), the dam of Ice Bear. The yearling's third dam is

the influential broodmare Mrs. Peterkin (Tom Fool).

During Saturday's session, 280 yearlings were sold for $30,677,000, down 4.1

percent from the $31,980,700 realized by 267 horses at the comparable session

last year. The average dropped 8.5 percent, from $119,778 to $109,561, while the

median fell 10 percent, from $100,000 to $90,000.

Through the first five sessions, 1,117 horses have changed hands for

$235,375,700, with an average of $210,721 and a $150,000 median. These

cumulative totals represent declines of 14.5 percent for gross receipts, 14.2

percent for the average price and 6.3 percent for the median from this point in

the 2007 sale, when 1,121 yearlings brought a total of $275,271,200, with a

$245,559 average and a $160,000 median.

The auction continues Sunday and runs through September 23, beginning at 10

a.m. (EDT). For more information, visit keeneland.com.
