Jon and Sarah Kelly's SPORTING ART (Doneraile Court) made a big stretch run

under Javier Castellano and rolled by early leader Tour Ireland (Tour d'Or)

inside the final furlong to post a 1 3/4-length victory in the $400,000

Calder

Derby (G3) on Saturday. Trained by Christophe Clement, who saddled Mauralakana

(Fr) (Muhtathir [GB]) to take the Mairzy Doates S. earlier on the card, the

talented Kentucky-bred broke well but was steadied on the first turn. Recovering

from that, he rated kindly on the inside early, got

shuffled back around the backstretch and was moved outside entering the lane,

prior to dusting his foes late to win going away. The final time for the

nine-furlong firm turf test was 1:47 4/5, and the 3-2 favorite paid $5, $2.80

and $2.60.

Tour Ireland was always among the early tempo and opened up a two-length led

in the lane, but could do no better than second while veering toward the rail in the latter

stages. The 11-1 shot was worth $15.80 and $5.40 while completing the $81.60

exacta. El Sultry Sun (Eltish) swept five-wide entering the lane while looming a

big threat, but eventually flattened out while missing the place spot by a head.

The 5-1 third choice was good for $3.80 and capped the $412.60 trifecta. Run

Sully Run (Cherokee Run) made a nice move entering the stretch but could not

keep up with the top trio, ultimately finishing off the $2,586.20 superfecta

(2-4-12-5) at 8-1.

Titan of Industry (Giant's Causeway) was next and followed by

Flying Dismount (Proud Citizen), Highly Honored (Double Honor), Acai (Three

Wonders), Wise Answer (Wised Up), He's Eze (Silver Deputy) and Dream Maestro

(Concerto). Afleet Bob (Northern Afleet) was withdrawn.

A winner in his first two starts on turf in England last summer for trainer

Garry Moore, Sporting Art ran fourth in his next race, the Sirenia S. (Eng-G3),

over Polytrack at Kempton, and concluded his European campaign with a fourth in

the Stardom S. over turf at Goodwood. Sporting Art did not race again until

February 20 in a second-level allowance, where he fell a neck short, but came

back to gamely take the Palm Beach S. (G3) last out. The sophomore's earnings

ballooned to $334,305 with this score, improving his mark to 7-4-1-0 in the

process.

Bred in Kentucky by Frank Penn and John R. Penn, Sporting Art has been

offered at auction four times in his young life, most recently garnering a bid

of 220,000 guineas (approximately $481,000) at the 2005 Tattersalls Horses in

Training Sale in England. Sporting Art is out of the unraced mare Playful Run

(Run Softly), who has produced one other winner and is the dam of the unraced

two-year-old colt named Cheyenne Nation (Gulch). Playful Run is out of the Sham

mare Safe Play, a seven-time stakes winner, including the 1982 La Canada S. (G1)

at Santa Anita. Playful Run is a half-sister to the versatile Defensive Play (Fappiano),

a Grade 1 winner on dirt and turf.
