Adena Springs snaps up Fort Larned

Last updated: 11/2/13 2:38 PM

Frank Stronach's Adena Springs Farm has announced an agreement to purchase

multiple Grade 1 winner Fort Larned effective following his title defense in

Saturday's $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic.

Fort Larned is a five-year-old son of the Mr. Prospector stallion E Dubai,

out of a winning daughter of Hall of Famer Bayakoa. He was bred and is

campaigned by the Whitham family and trained by Ian Wilkes. Fort Larned has won

10 of his 24 lifetime starts, and nearly $4.2 million to date. He is one of only

three wire-to-wire winners of the Classic and in addition to that race, he

accounted for Grade 1 victories in the 2012 Whitney Handicap at Saratoga, and

the 2013 Stephen Foster at Churchill Downs.

"Adena Springs is very pleased to purchase Fort Larned and we expect him to

be part of our exceptional stallion roster," Stronach said. "He is a gifted

racehorse, consistently displaying speed and stamina on dirt, and an outcross

for Northern Dancer and Seattle Slew sire lines."

"Fort Larned is the culmination of 30 years of breeding and racing for the

Whitham family, and his Breeders' Cup win brought back great memories of his

granddam, Bayakoa, who won the Breeders' Cup Distaff twice," said owner Janis

Whitham, who was represented by Doug Cauthen Thoroughbred Management in the

transaction.

"We are excited about him standing at Adena Springs because we know he will

have every chance to succeed, and we look forward to supporting him."
