Travers (G1) winner AFLEET EXPRESS (Afleet Alex) has suffered a small tear in

the upper suspensory ligament of his left foreleg and will be sidelined the rest

of the year, trainer Jimmy Jerkens announced Wednesday. The injury isn't

considered career-threatening.

"He's not lame; he never took a bad step," Jerkens explained. "It's just a

little tear, and we probably got it in time so there was no real lasting damage.

It's disappointing because he was in great shape, but we want to have him back

as a four-year-old, so we won't go on this year."

Afleet Express will be rested for 90 days before being brought back for a 2011

campaign, Jerkens added.

Owned by Gainesway Stable and Martin Cherry, Afleet Express has won

four-of-seven career starts. After recording a 7 3/4-length allowance victory at

Belmont Park in May, the dark bay colt captured his stakes debut, the June 19

Pegasus S. (G3), at Monmouth Park. He finished third in the Jim Dandy (G2)

before prevailing by a nose over Fly Down (Mineshaft) in a thrilling edition of

the "Midsummer Derby" on August 28.

Afleet Express, who was being pointed toward the $750,000 Jockey Club Gold

Cup Invitational (G1) at Belmont Park on October 2, is expected to return to

training in Florida early next year.
