After Market chalks up fourth in a row in Del Mar

Last updated: 8/26/07 9:18 PM

Martin and Pam Wygod's homebred AFTER MARKET (Storm Cat) looked to have his

opponents over the barrel in Sunday's $250,000

Del Mar H.

(G2), and so it proved, as he extended his winning streak to four in an

efficient performance. Making light work of his 124-pound impost, the John

Shirreffs charge saved ground while tracking fractions of :24 3/5, :48 1/5, 1:12

3/5 and 1:36 2/5, angled to the outside to deliver his challenge on the turn,

and drove to a measured three-quarters of a length victory beneath Alex Solis.

After Market completed 1 3/8 miles on firm turf in 2:13 to pay $2.80, $2.20 and

$2.10 as the 2-5 favorite.

The next four finishers were noses apart on the wire. Runaway Dancer (Runaway

Groom), who had loped along in last early, finished energetically along the

inside for runner-up honors over Spring House (Chester House). The second-placer

gave back $5.40 and $3.80 at 12-1, and show was worth $4.60, also at 12-1. The

$1 exotics totaled $8.70 (exacta), $50.20 (trifecta), and $160.80 (2-3-8-6

superfecta) with 9-1 shot Toasted (Hennessy) in fourth. Atlando (Ire) (Hernando

[Fr]) rounded out the quartet separated by the camera, trailed by Bravo Maestro

(Stravinsky) and the pacesetting Obrigado (Fr) (Enrique). Global Genius (Ire)

(Galileo [Ire]) was withdrawn.

After Market wasn't originally supposed to run in the Del Mar H. The August

11 Arlington Million S. (G1) was his intended target, but he was scratched as

the morning-line favorite in that event after rain softened the turf course, and

this spot appeared on his itinerary as an alternative. His winning sequence

began in the Inglewood H. (G3) in April. The four-year-old dark bay then

dethroned Lava Man (Slew City Slew) in the Charles Whittingham Memorial H. (G1),

and he added the Eddie Read H. (G1) to his trophy collection last time out. As a

sophomore, he captured the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame S. (G2) and

Lexington S. (G3). The mega-talented turf star improved his lifetime mark to

12-8-0-0, $853,685.

Bred in Kentucky, After Market is the first registered foal out of the Grade

1-winning mare Tranquility Lake (Rahy), who amassed more than $1.6 million in

earnings in the course of her four-year career. Among her nine stakes wins, she

garnered the 1999 Gamely Breeders' Cup H. (G1) and 2000 Yellow Ribbon S. (G1).

She has since produced four full brothers to After Market -- a well regarded

sophomore named Jalil who broke his maiden in England for Godolphin in June, an

unraced juvenile named Inflection Point, an unnamed yearling and a 2007 colt.

Out of Grade 2-placed Winter's Love (Danzig), Tranquility Lake is herself a

half-sister to three-time Grade 2 winner and successful sire Benchmark (Alydar).

This is the family of 1983 Belmont S. (G1) hero Caveat.
