Assateague leads all the way in Penny Memorial
|
Assateague seized the initiative at the start and never came under serious pressure leading wire to wire in Tuesday's Grade 3, $200,000 Penny Memorial at Parx Racing, earning her first graded stakes victory with a 2 1/4-length decision. With Joel Rosario up, the Michael Matz-trained mare led by a length after an opening quarter-mile in :23 3/5 and continued to show the way on a short lead over the firm turf course, establishing splits of :47 3/5 and 1:11 before accelerating clear into the stretch. The battle was for second as Assateague cruised to the wire unopposed, completing 1 1/16 miles in 1:40 3/5. The win mutuel returned $6.40 for the 2-1 second choice in the wagering. Game Fair, a 39-1 outsider, rallied late to edge 5-2 third choice Alaura Michele by a neck for second. Nellie Cashman finished fourth and was followed by Appealing Cat, 2-1 favorite Effie Trinket, Remember Then and Rockinonthewater.

Bred in Kentucky by owners Helen C. Alexander, Dorothy Matz and Helen K.
Groves, Assateague has now earned $398,059 from a 18-5-2-2 ledger.
The five-year-old mare recorded her first stakes placing with a third in the
2012 Pebbles at Belmont Park. Assateague garnered her initial stakes tally in the
De La Rose at Saratoga last year and also placed in the Finney at Belmont in
late October.
She opened 2014 with a sixth in the Grade 3 Beaugay at Belmont May 3 and then
finished a close fourth in the June 8 Intercontinental over the same course
prior to the Penny Memorial.
By Stormy Atlantic, Assateague hails from a classy female family. The
Kentucky-bred is out of the stakes-winning Dixieland Band mare Amelia and counts
Grade 3 winner Kindergarden Kid as a half-brother.
Her second maternal dam, Grade 2 queen Aquilegia, produced three stakes
winners as well as the dam of Bayern, a smashing 7 1/2-length winner of the
Grade 2 Woody Stephens on the Belmont Stakes undercard. Bayern is expected to
make his next start in the $1 million Haskell Invitational on July 27. Aquilegia
is out of 1983 Broodmare of the Year Courtly Dee.
