Bahamian Squall back in action at Gulfstream
|
The cancellation of Calder's annual Summit of Speed program due to an impending dates agreement between Calder and Gulfstream Park has resulted in the latter track carding a quintet of substitute sprint stakes on Saturday. Trainer David Fawkes expects Bahamian Squall to have his 'A' game in the Housebuster over 6 1/2 furlongs. After establishing himself as a top-class sprinter last year when he captured the Smile Sprint Handicap and finished second in Saratoga's Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap, Bahamian Squall, unfortunately, didn't have much of a chance to show his talents in the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Santa Anita on November 2. Crowded at the start and forced to race extremely wide around the final turn, the son of Gone West had to settle for sixth place, 2 3/4 lengths behind the winner. |
"It was a bad trip, but I don't know how much he liked California. When he
got out there, I don't think he was doing as could as he could have been doing,"
Fawkes recalled. "He ran a huge race, all things considered, but I don't think
he was himself. He's come back stronger, better, this trip back than I've ever
seen him. So I'm really expecting a lot from him."
Bahamian Squall hasn't raced since finishing third in the Sunshine State at
Gulfstream on December 8 due to a chronic issue with a foot abscess.
"It was one of those that migrated around the foot and he just wouldn't get
well. We decided to give him a break," Fawkes said. "He really does well off a
break."
In his return in the Housebuster, Bahamian Squall will be meeting some
challengers with sharp recent form, including Mr. Baker, Grande Shores and Dad'z
Laugh.
Mr. Baker comes into the Housebuster on a three-race winning streak for
trainer Kirk Ziadie, who claimed the five-year-old for $16,000 on February 23.
In his most recent start, the Ponche at Calder, Mr. Baker posted a 2 1/2-length
victory over Dad'z Laugh, who had previously won the Big Drama at Gulfstream.
Two starts back, Mr. Baker prevailed narrowly over Grande Shores in a
seven-furlong starter allowance at Gulfstream.
Also entered in the Housebuster are Action Andy, a multiple-stakes winner who
won an allowance during the Champions Meet; Black Diamond Cat, who won the
Housebuster at last year's inaugural summer meeting; and Close It Out, who
finished second behind Black Diamond Cat in the 2013 Housebuster.
One of the more intriguing entrants is Heart Stealer, a filly who is also
cross-entered in the $75,000
for fillies and mares.
"I just have to look at how the race shapes up, look at the post positions,
etc.," said trainer Marty Wolfson, who entered four fillies in the Paseana,
which is run at 6 1/2 furlongs.
|
Heart Stealer captured the $200,000 Inside Information at Gulfstream on March 22 and had previously won the Sugar Swirl on December 14. Wolfson had targeted the Humana Distaff at Churchill Downs in May for his filly, but he had to alter his plans when Heart Stealer developed an abscess. With the Ballerina at Saratoga in August now the target, Wolfson found the Paseana to be a good fit timing-wise. "She always runs good," Wolfson said. "I just want her to come back and have that race in her before the Ballerina. She doesn't have to run her best race. I just want her to run a good race and then come back for the Ballerina." The Wolfson contingent also includes stakes winner Centrique, Quiet Hour and Kipling's Joy. Wolfson expects a big effort from Centrique, who is coming off two in-the-money finishes in stakes races at Calder. Centrique won the Claiming Crown Glass Slipper at Gulfstream last December and has done well at the distance. |
"Centrique, this is her distance," Wolfson said. "She's won at the distance
two times. She probably is the one to beat, really."
Salamera, who finished just behind Centrique in the U Can Do It, is also a
contender.
C. Zee, who captured the one-mile Sir Bear at Gulfstream Park two starts
back, is set to return to the $75,000
Run for three-year-olds over 6 1/2 furlongs. The Stanley Gold-trained colt
will seek to turn the tables on Bolita Boyz, who defeated him last time out in
the six-furlong Unbridled at Calder.
C. Zee broke his maiden going away at six furlongs in December, before
finishing second in the six-furlong Spectacular Bid and second behind Wildcat
Red in the seven-furlong Hutcheson. He suffered his only off-the-board finish
when 10th in the Fountain of Youth in his first start around two turns.
Bolita Boyz, who got the jump on C Zee to capture the Unbridled last time
out, also finished second behind Wildcat Red. However, the Bill White-trained
colt was impeded by Wildcat Red and was awarded the victory in the Juvenile
Sprint by disqualification at Gulfstream Park in November.
Little Daddy, who finished second in the 1 1/16-mile English Channel on turf
on June 14, and Rasta Rant, who finished second behind Bolita Boyz in the
Unbridled, are also entered.

When Little Alexis won her debut at Gulfstream in February, she turned a lot of heads while topping the highly touted My Miss Sophia. My Miss Sophia would go on to win the Gazelle at Aqueduct and finish second in the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs, but Little Alexis wound up going directly to the sidelines. Nearly five months later, Little Alexis is ready to make long-awaited second start, as well as stakes debut, in the $75,000 for three-year-old fillies. The daughter of Mr. Greeley was scheduled to run two weeks ago, but trainer Carlo Vaccarezza scratched her after heavy rain hampered the track conditions. "I've been waiting so long to get her to a thousand-percent sound after she had a couple of knick-knacks here and there," Vaccarezza said. "I did the right thing (by scratching), because when I was leaving the racetrack that day, that race was going on, and it was torrentially coming down. I think it was the right thing for her. What's the difference to wait another week or two?" |
Scandalous Act enters the Cash Run with an impressive freshman resume and a
promising 2014 debut. The now three-year-old swept the filly division of the
Florida Stallion Stakes series (now the Florida Sire Stakes) last year and
contested the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies for trainer Kathleen O'Connell. In
her sophomore debut, she ran second in the Leave Me Alone on May 31.
Marty Wolfson has three entrants for the Cash Run, including Yes Liz, an easy
winner of an entry-level allowance at Gulfstream in her most recent start on
June 14; Euphrosyne, a graded stakes-placed filly who was eased in the Acorn
last time out; and Second Base, a maiden winner on May 4 who was off the board
in a turf stakes last time out.
Multiple stakes winner Madame Giry was entered to run against the boys in the
$75,000 Bob
Umphrey Turf Sprint. The Cam Gambolati-trained mare is seeking her first
victory of the year but brings an abundance of back class into the five-furlong
turf dash.
Having earned nearly $450,000 in purses, the daughter of Castledale won
back-to-back stakes last season, the Smart N Fancy at Saratoga and the Jameela
at Laurel. In her most recent start, she broke 14th in the six-furlong The Very
One at Pimlico, only to be beaten by just two lengths in an unlucky
seventh-place finish.
Cajun Breeze, who returned to turf to record his first success over the inner
course last time out at Gulfstream, and Starship Wildcat, who captured a
second-level allowance last time out, also loom as major factors in the Umphrey.
Determinato, a veteran turf campaigner trained by Bill White, finished third
in the Gulfstream Turf Sprint on February 1 but is still looking for his first
2014 win.
