Kentucky Derby (G1) winner BARBARO (Dynaformer) is stable and comfortable,

his medical team reported Tuesday. The four-year-old colt suffered a setback

while battling laminitis in his left hind foot last week and an area of undermined

hoof wall was removed during surgery on Saturday.

"Barbaro's comfort improved considerably following the procedure on Saturday

morning," said Dr. Dean Richardson, chief of surgery at the University of

Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center. "He has been standing and moving around his

stall well enough that sling support has not been added since. His appetite has

improved and his vital signs are stable. Overall, we are pleased with his

progress following the setback to his left hind foot."

Barbaro developed laminitis in his left hind foot in July while recovering

from a shattered right hind leg, which he injured during the early stages of the

May 20 Preakness S. (G1). He remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the George D.

Widener Hospital for Large Animals at the University of Pennsylvania's New

Bolton Center.
