Barbaro has cast changed on left foot

Kentucky Derby (G1) winner BARBARO (Dynaformer) slept well after having the

modified cast on his left hind foot changed on Tuesday, according to Dr. Dean

Richardson, chief of surgery at the New Bolton Center. The colt developed a

severe, life-threatening case of laminitis in his left hind foot about two weeks

ago after undergoing a second surgery to repair his injured right hind leg,

which he shattered during the early stages of the May 20 Preakness S. (G1). At

the time, his right hind leg displayed signs of infection.

"I'm happy with the appearance of the foot, which is doing as well as can be

expected," Richardson said. "Over the last several days, his temperature has

been normal and his blood work has significantly improved, suggesting that the

infection in his right hind is under control."

Barbaro's heart rate is consistently normal, a good indication that he is

stable and comfortable, according to Richardson.

Barbaro, who won six of seven starts and earned more than $2.3 million,

remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the George D. Widener Hospital for Large

Animals at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center in Kennett Square.
