Barbaro has uneventful weekend

Last updated: 7/24/06 5:41 PM

Kentucky Derby (G1) winner BARBARO (Dynaformer) had an uneventful weekend and

continues to be comfortable, according to Dr. Dean Richardson, chief of surgery

at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center.

"He's maintaining an excellent attitude," Richardson said. "We change his left

hind

foot cast regularly, and we may change his right hind cast some time this week."

Barbaro continues to spend several hours each day in a sling, which takes

weight off his hind legs. The colt developed a severe, life-threatening case of

laminitis in his left hind foot after undergoing a second surgery on July 8 to

repair his injured right hind leg, which he shattered during the early stages of

the May 20 Preakness S. (G1).

"He is out of the sling overnight because he is very smart about lying down

and sleeping," Richardson explained. "He continues to eat a diet designed to

maximize protein and caloric intake, and his body condition is good for a horse

that has had his problems. His diet includes a selection of the best quality

hay."

Barbaro is being closely monitored in the Intensive Care Unit of the George

D. Widener Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center in

Kennett Square.
