Barbaro remains stable

Kentucky Derby (G1) winner BARBARO (Dynaformer) continues to display good

vital signs and had another quiet, restful night, according to Dr. Dean

Richardson, chief of surgery at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton

Center.

"He remains in stable condition, and he is eating well," Richardson said

Monday. "We continue to manage his pain successfully, and he is alert."

Last week, Barbaro developed a severe, life-threatening case of laminitis in

his left hind foot. Richardson performed a hoof wall resection that removed 80

percent of the hoof. He was fitted with a modified fiberglass foot cast, which

will be changed as needed so that the hoof can be treated and watched for signs

of infection. The foot cast is rigid and provides greater stability and support

than a bandage.

"It is important for people to understand that this is not a 'routine'

laminitis," Richardson said. "The care involved in treating a hoof with this

degree of compromise is complex."

Barbaro underwent a second surgery on July 8 to repair his injured right hind leg,

which he shattered during the early stages of the May 20 Preakness S. (G1). The

colt is tolerating his right hind cast well, according to the New Bolton Center.

The three-year-old remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the George D.

Widener Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center in

Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.
