Bay Meadows BC Sprint

Last updated: 6/4/06 6:35 PM

Phil Baneth, Tony Vitone and Art Sherman's CARTHAGE (Smoke Glacken) was

tested for the entire six furlongs, but proved best when pulling away from

Churchill Downs H. (G2) winner Trickey Trevor (Demaloot Demashoot) in the final

moments of Sunday's $108,125

Bay Meadows Breeders' Cup Sprint H. (G3). Sent to

the early lead by jockey Dennis Carr, the gray gelding battled neck and neck

with Trickey Trevor through splits of :22 2/5, :44 4/5 and :56 2/5 before

completing the three-quarter of a mile contest over the fast track in 1:09 1/5.

Sent off the even-money favorite, Carthage returned $4.20 and $2.20 while

keying the $3.70 exacta ($1). Trickey Trevor tired in the end, coming home a

length behind the winner to pay $2.40 at 6-5 while Areyoutalkintome (Smokester),

who broke slowly from the gate, displayed good late speed to get up for third. Bonfante (Fruition) rounded out the order of finish after Peak a Bootrando (Bertrando)

was scratched from the race.

This victory kept Carthage on a five-race win streak while improving his

overall record to 18-9-2-2 with earnings of $306,935. The six-year-old son of

Smoke Glacken adds his first graded stakes score to his resume with this win and

now has four total stakes wins, all of which came this season.

Bred in Kentucky by Donald Eberts, Carthage is out of the winning Halo mare

Halomatic, who also produced 2000 Rebel S. (G3) runner-up Big Numbers (Numerous)

and an unnamed yearling filly by Hold That Tiger most recently. In 2002,

Carthage was purchased by his connections for $440,000 at the Keeneland April

Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale.
