Bernardini, Henny Hughes retired to stud at Darley

Bernardini recorded the first of his three Grade 1 wins in the Preakness (Jim Tyrrell/Horsephotos.com)

Grade 1 winners BERNARDINI (A.P. Indy) and HENNY HUGHES (Hennessy) have been

retired and will stand the 2007 breeding season at Darley at

Jonabell near Lexington, Kentucky.

Bernardini, a leading contender for Horse of the Year honors, finished second

by one length to Invasor (Arg) (Candy Stripes) in Saturday's Breeders' Cup

Classic (G1). The three-year-old won six of eight starts this season, including

the Preakness S. (G1), Travers S. (G1), Jockey Club Gold Cup S. (G1) and Jim

Dandy S. (G2), earning $3,060,480.

The Darley homebred is out of Grade 1 winner Cara Rafaela (Quiet American).

Henny Hughes, who finished last as the 8-5 favorite in the Breeders' Cup

Sprint (G1), won six of 10 starts and earned $1,124,820. The three-year-old won

the Vosburgh S. (G1), King's Bishop S. (G1) and Jersey Shore Breeders' Cup S.

(G3) this year. At two, he won the Saratoga Special S. (G2) and Tremont S. and

finished second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1), Champagne S. (G1) and

Hopeful S. (G1).

Henny Hughes is out of the stakes-placed Meadow Flyer (Meadowlake).

Bernardini will stand for $100,000 and Henny Hughes for $40,000.
