One year after snaring Havre de Grace for $10 million, Mandy Pope's Whisper

Hill Farm went to $5.2 million to secure once again the top seller at Monday's

Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November Sale -- Group 3-placed BETTERBETTERBETTER

(Galileo), carrying her first foal on a February 16 cover to War Front. The

penultimate horse to enter the ring as part of the late addendum to the sale,

Hip No. 220 was offered by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, agent.

Betterbetterbetter was the most spectacular of an incredible 24 horses to

sell for $1 million or more. Upon the conclusion of trade, Fasig-Tipton reported

that 129 horses grossed $73,859,000, an increase of 22.6 percent from the

$60,220,000 realized by 87 hips last year. The average dipped 17.3 percent, from

$692,184 (a figure inflated by Havre de Grace's price) to $572,550. The median,

on the other hand, spiked 31.6 percent, from $190,000 to $250,000.

The four-year-old Betterbetterbetter is a three-quarter sister to Irish Group

1-winning highweight and triple classic-placed Quarter Moon (Sadler's Wells),

the dam of Group 1-placed You'll Be Mine (Kingmambo); Yesterday (Sadler's

Wells), winner of the 2003 Irish One Thousand Guineas (Ire-G1); and dual

classic-placed All My Loving (Sadler's Wells), the dam of ill-fated multiple

Group 2 hero Thomas Chippendale (Dansili).

Betterbetterbetter is out of the Darshaan mare Jude, from the prolific family

of classic winner Aussie Rules (Danehill); highweights Albanova (Alzao) and

Allegretto (Galileo); and multiple Group 1 queen Alborada (Alzao), among others.

Trained by Aidan O'Brien, Betterbetterbetter missed by a head in last year's

Cheshire Oaks and later finished second in the Noblesse (Ire-G3) at Cork. She

earned $47,627 from a record of 7-1-3-0.

Borges Torrealba Holdings paid $4.9 million for multiple Grade 1-winning

broodmare LOVE AND PRIDE (A.P. Indy), who dominated the leaderboard much of the

night. Consigned by Three Chimneys Sales, agent,

and sporting Hip 90, the five-year-old blueblood is carrying her first foal on a

March 9 cover to Distorted Humor.

Love and Pride is out of the Grade 1-placed Ile de France (Storm Cat), making

her a three-quarter sister to champion and sire Bernardini (A.P. Indy). Ile de

France is herself a half-sister to Bernardini and to Lovely Regina (Deputy

Minister), the dam of multiple Grade 3 victor Thiskyhasnolimit (Sky Mesa). Love

and Pride's second dam is Grade 1 star and Broodmare of the Year Cara Rafaela

(Quiet American).

Love and Pride led much of the way at $4.9 million

(Matt Wooley/EquiSport Photos)

A $380,000 RNA as a Keeneland April two-year-old, Love and Pride won or

placed in 10 stakes, and her scorecard stands at 17-7-2-4, $985,760. The Todd

Pletcher trainee captured last year's Personal Ensign Invitational (G1),

Zenyatta (G1) and Obeah (G3), and her most notable stakes placings came in the

2011 Gazelle (G1) and 2012 Top Flight (G2) and Allaire duPont Distaff (G3).

Three Chimneys also offered two-time Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1) star

MIZDIRECTION (Mizzen Mast), who commanded $2.7 million from Al Shaqab Racing. Touring the ring as Hip 104, the five-year-old was

cataloged as a racing or broodmare prospect.

Mizdirection has come a long way since selling for $85,000 as a Keeneland

September yearling and $50,000 as a Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May juvenile. The

gray became a nine-time stakes winner for trainer Mike Puype, amassing $1,719,621 in earnings from her

17-11-4-1 resume.

Aside from beating the boys in the 2012 Turf Sprint, and again in last

Saturday's renewal, Mizdirection owns wins in the past two runnings of both the

Monrovia (G3 in 2012 and G2 this year) and Las Cienegas (ungraded in 2012 and G3

this year), and she carried her speed over a mile in the February 18 Buena Vista

(G2).

Mizdirection is a half-sister to stakes victress Hurricane Bernie (Sea of

Secrets). Both were produced by the Clever Trick mare Deceptive and descend from

the extended family of Grade 1-winning millionaire Hooh Why (Cloud Hopping).

Shadai Farm likewise paid $2.7 million for multiple Grade 1 queen CHAMPAGNE

D'ORO (Medaglia d'Oro), in foal to Tapit on a June 5 cover. Part of the addendum

as Hip 215, the six-year-old mare came from the consignment of Bluewater Sales,

agent.

Champagne d'Oro was initially purchased by Southern Equine Stables for

$210,000 as a Keeneland September yearling. She garnered the 2010 Acorn (G1) and

Test (G1) and placed in a quartet of stakes, topped by the Prioress (G1) and

Fair Grounds Oaks (G2). She retired with a scorecard of 23-3-3-2, $614,940.

A half-sister to 2011 Belmont S. (G1) upsetter Ruler on Ice (Roman Ruler),

Champagne d'Oro is out of Grade 1-placed stakes victress Champagne Glow

(Saratoga Six). Her dam is in turn a half-sister to ill-fated multiple Grade 1

star Grand Canyon (Fappiano) and Group 1-winning highweight Jurado (Alleged).

Earlier, Shadai Farm went to $2.4 million to secure Grade 1 heroine IN LINGERIE

(Empire Maker), carrying her first foal on a May 4 cover to unbeaten phenom

Frankel. The four-year-old mare was also consigned by Bluewater Sales, agent, as Hip

73.

In Lingerie had RNA'd in her two previous sales appearances -- famously for

$2.2 million at this very venue last year, and as a Keeneland September yearling

for just $22,000.

The winner of the 2012 Spinster (G1), Black-Eyed Susan (G2) and Bourbonette

Oaks (G3), In Lingerie also placed in the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) and

Alabama S. (G1). She earned $712,265 from her 8-4-2-1 line.

In Lingerie was produced by Grade 2 winner Cat Chat (Storm Cat), and her

second dam is champion Phone Chatter (Phone Trick). This is the immediate family

of Grade 1-winning freshman sire Dixie Chatter (Dixie Union) and Rumor (Indian

Charlie), successful in the March 10 Las Flores (G3).

Grade 1-winning millionaire JOYFUL VICTORY (Tapit) was snapped up by Aaron

and Marie Jones for $2 million. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent for

Rick Porter's Fox Hill, the five-year-old mare toured the ring as Hip 80.

Joyful Victory was first sold for $60,000 as a Keeneland January yearling,

and later commanded $400,000 as a Fasig-Tipton Florida two-year-old in training.

She went on to earn $1,252,679 from her 20-7-5-4 record, having won or placed in

14 stakes over four seasons of racing.

Her six stakes wins comprise the 2011 Fantasy (G2) and Honeybee (G3), the

2012 Tiffany Lass, the January 26 Houston Ladies Classic in track-record time

for 1 1/16 miles at Sam Houston, the March 16 Santa Margarita (G1) and the July

28 Molly Pitcher (G2). The Larry Jones trainee concluded her career with a third

in the September 28 Zenyatta, but she was cataloged as a racing or

broodmare prospect.

Joyful Victory was produced by the winning Wild Lucy Black (Wild Again), a

full sister to the stakes-placed Fine Impression. This is the family of Canadian

Grade 3 scorer Artie Hot (Black Minnaloushe) and further back, ill-fated

champion Roving Boy (Olden Times) and multiple Grade 1 scorer A Wild Ride (Wild

Again).

RHUMB LINE (Mr. Greeley), carrying a full sibling to Zazu and Flashback on a

May 11 cover to Tapit, fetched $2 million from Pope's Whisper Hill Farm. The

13-year-old mare was offered by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, agent, as Hip 134.

Produced by the Pleasant Colony mare Rose Rhapsody, the three-time winner was

making her sixth sales appearance, most recently selling for $850,000 as a

Keeneland November broodmare.

Rhumb Line is responsible for four stakes performers, led by multiple Grade 1

queen and $691,985-earner Zazu. Victorious in the 2011 Las Virgenes (G1), Lady's

Secret (G1) and Hollywood Oaks (G2), she also placed in such events as the

Kentucky Oaks (G1), Santa Anita Oaks (G1) and Clement L. Hirsch (G1). Zazu's

full brother, current three-year-old Flashback, took the Robert B. Lewis (G2)

and finished second in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) and San Felipe (G2). The Bob

Baffert colt launched his comeback Saturday with a near-miss second in the

Damascus. Rhumb Line's other notable offspring are stakes winner Corinthian's

Jewel (Corinthian) and Group 2-placed Art Princess (Officer).

Katsumi Yoshida prevailed in the bidding for Grade 1 queen MI SUENO (Pulpit),

in foal to Frankel on an April 28 cover, at $1.9 million. Sporting Hip 195, the

six-year-old mare came from the consignment of Bluewater Sales, agent. Mi Sueno

was a $1.7 million Keeneland November weanling purchase by Southern Equine.

During her only season of racing, Mi Sueno captured the 2009 Darley Debutante

(G1) and Sorrento (G3) as a juvenile. Her first foal is the unraced two-year-old

filly Por Que Te Sueno (Medaglia d'Oro).

Mi Sueno was produced by Madcap Escapade (Hennessy), the 2004 Ashland (G1)

heroine and track record-setter at Gulfstream Park. Madcap Escapade is in turn a

half-sister to fellow Grade 1 winner Dubai Escapade (Awesome Again).

A few minutes later, Yoshida matched that $1.9 million price to scoop up

champion AWESOME FEATHER (Awesome of Course), carrying her first foal on a

February 25 cover to Medaglia d'Oro. Three years ago at this sale, she was sold

for $2.3 million to Adena Springs, which consigned her here.

Awesome Feather was the unbeaten champion two-year-old filly of 2010, her

season capped by a brilliant win in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1).

Following her sale to Frank Stronach's Adena Springs, she added the 2011 Gazelle

(G1) to her resume, and scored another high-profile victory in the 2012 Florida

Sunshine Millions Distaff. Beaten only once in 11 starts, she amassed a bankroll

of $1,912,746.

Awesome Feather was produced by the multiple stakes-winning and Grade

3-placed Precious Feather (Gone West), who is also responsible for the

stakes-placed Brooks 'n Down (Montbrook). Her second dam is English Group 3

victress and classic-placed Last Feather (*Vaguely Noble), and her third dam is

champion and noted producer Quill (*Princequillo).

Grade 1-winning broodmare CARELESS JEWEL (Tapit), Hip 103, was sold to Summer

Wind Farm for $1.85 million. Bluewater Sales, agent, offered the seven-year-old

in foal on a March 12 cover to Bodemeister.

Careless Jewel, who brought only $40,000 as a Keeneland September yearling,

swept the 2009 Alabama (G1), Delaware Oaks (G2) and Cotillion, and boasts a

record of 7-5-0-1, $1,013,346. Purchased by Southern Equine Stables for $1.95

million at this sale in 2010, the gray has produced two foals, a yearling colt

by Street Cry and a weanling colt by Medaglia d'Oro.

Careless Jewel's dam, the unraced Hennessy mare Sweet and Careless, is a

half-sister to multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Subordination (Mt.

Livermore). She descends from the noted matron Careless Notion (Jester), whose

descendants include champion Fiji (Rainbow Quest).

DANCEINTHESUNLIGHT (A.P. Indy), the dam of current Grade 2-winning sophomore

Moreno (Ghostzapper), brought a winning bid of $1.75 million from Denali Stud,

agent. A late addition to the sale as Hip 213, the eight-year-old mare was

offered by Bluewater Sales, agent, in foal on a May 2 cover to Giant's Causeway.

An unraced daughter of Canadian Hall of Famer Dancethruthedawn (Mr.

Prospector), Danceinthesunlight had previously been purchased by Southern Equine

for $675,000 as a broodmare at the 2008 Keeneland November Sale. She was

carrying her first foal at the time, three-time winner Sunlight Cat (Forest

Wildcat). Moreno, her second foal, has bankrolled $669,400 while landing the

Dwyer (G2) and placing in the Travers (G1), Pennsylvania Derby (G2) and Jim

Dandy (G2). He was most recently 10th in the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1).

Danceinthesunlight is a full sister to the winning Dance with Doves, herself

the dam of Dance Again (Awesome Again), who just captured the October 12

Carotene at Woodbine.

They hail from an exceptional family developed by Sam-Son Farms.

Dancethruthedawn, who turned the Queen's Plate/Woodbine Oaks double in 2001,

also scored in the 2002 Go for Wand H. (G1). She is a full sister to 2000

Queen's Plate and Prince of Wales winner Scatter the Gold. Both are out of U.S.

and Canadian Hall of Famer Dance Smartly (Danzig), making them three-quarter

siblings to Grade 1 star and perennial leading sire Smart Strike (Mr.

Prospector).

S. Potter, agent for Town and Country, purchased Grade 3 winner AGAVE KISS

(Lion Heart) for $1.5 million. Carrying her first foal on a May 14 cover to

Tapit, the four-year-old was consigned by Gainesway, agent, and cataloged as Hip

193.

Agave Kiss was a four-time stakes winner, with her signature score coming in

last year's Cicada (G3), and she also placed in the Prioress (G1). Her resume

reads 10-6-1-1, $339,400. The half-sister to multiple stakes-placed Luxury

Appeal (Johannesburg) was produced by Grade 3-placed stakes diva Salty Romance

(Salt Lake).

Canadian champion and millionaire INGLORIOUS (Hennessy) was purchased by

Australia's Kia-Ora Stud for $1.35 million. Listed as a broodmare prospect, the

five-year-old mare was offered as Hip 72 by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, agent.

Inglorious earned her Sovereign Award as champion three-year-old filly of

2011, courtesy of victories in the Queen's Plate over males as well as the

Woodbine Oaks and La Lorgnette. Her resume also includes scores in the Ontario

Lassie and Fanfreluche as a juvenile, and five stakes placings, all of them

graded. The $83,556 CTHS yearling bankrolled $1,421,222 from a 16-5-2-4 line.

Produced by the stakes-winning Smart Strike mare Noble Strike, Inglorious is

a half-sister to Grade 3 queen Dixie Strike (Dixie Union), who also defeated

males in the 2012 Prince of Wales. Another half-sibling is the stakes-placed

Sebastian's Song (Cherokee Run).

Kia-Ora Stud subsequently acquired Grade 1 winner PURE FUN (Pure Prize), Hip

127, for the exact same price of $1.35 million. The sophomore was offered as a

racing or broodmare prospect by Lane's End Farm, agent.

Pure Fun, a $5,000 RNA as a Keeneland November weanling, was scouted by

trainer Ken McPeek for $22,000 at the same venue the following September. Under

his tutelage, she prevailed in last December's Hollywood Starlet (G1) and in the

Indiana Oaks (G2) two starts back. Pure Fun just wound up fifth in Saturday's

Chilukki (G2), and her scorecard stands at 13-4-1-2, $487,360.

A half-sister to the multiple stakes-placed producer Lady Cheyne (Affirmed),

Pure Fun is out of the winning Key to the Mint mare Chelsea Green. She shares

the same female line as Grade 1 heroine Chelsea Flower (His Majesty), dam of

Group 3-winning sire Kentucky Dynamite (Kingmambo).

Current Grade 2 vixen SUMMER APPLAUSE (Harlan's Holiday), fourth in

Saturday's Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, went to Stonereath Stud for $1.3

million. Greenwood Lodge Farm offered its four-year-old homebred, Hip 164, as a

racing or broodmare prospect.

Summer Applause, unsold for $82,000 as a Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling,

brandishes a line of 15-6-3-0, $814,906. Victorious in last year's Rachel

Alexandra (G3), she has annexed this term's Top Flight (G2), Allaire duPont

Distaff (G3) and Lady's Secret, and she took runner-up honors in the Spinster

(G1) prior to the Breeders' Cup.

A half-sister to multiple stakes-placed producer Big Easy (Gulch), Summer

Applause was produced by the unraced Summer Exhibition (Royal Academy), herself

a half-sister to Grade 2-winning millionaire Recoup the Cash (Copelan).

Grade 2 queen NEFERTINI (Empire Maker), carrying her first foal on a March 11

cover to Tapit, was purchased by Reynolds Bell, agent for Alpha Delta, for $1.25

million. Consigned by Four Star Sales, agent for Glencrest Farm, the

five-year-old mare was listed as Hip 111.

Nefertini, who first sold for $80,000 at Keeneland September, earned her most

significant laurel in the 2012 Go for Wand H. (G2) and signed off with a record

of 10-5-2-1, $316,320. She is out of the multiple stakes-placed Broad Brush mare

Looking Afar, who is in turn a half-sister to Grade 3-winning sire Survivalist

(Danzig). Nefertini's second dam, Miner's Game (Mr. Prospector), is a winning

full sister to multiple Grade 1 star and influential sire Seeking the Gold.

Right after buying Joyful Victory, the Joneses added multiple Grade 2 winner

JUANITA (Mineshaft), also from the Taylor Made consignment, for $1.2 million.

Carrying her first foal on a February 24 cover to Medaglia d'Oro, the

five-year-old mare followed Joyful Victory into the ring as Hip 81.

Juanita, who garnered the 2011 Indiana Oaks (G2) and 2012 La Troienne (G2),

compiled a mark of 21-6-3-3, $509,005. She was produced by Grade 3-placed stakes

scorer Wishful Splendor (Smart Strike), making her a half-sister to stakes

winner Sirocco Strike (Forestry) and to the stakes-placed Isla (Unbridled's

Song). Wishful Splendor is in turn a half-sister to Grade 1 vixen Private

Persuasion (Pirate's Bounty), from the family of 2008 Belmont S. (G1) shocker Da'

Tara (Tiznow) and Grade 3-winning freshman sire Denis of Cork (Harlan's

Holiday).

Later in the evening, the Joneses made it a trio when paying $1.2 million for

Grade 2 victress MAMMA KIMBO (Discreet Cat), carrying her first foal on an April

19 cover to Bernardini. Like Joyful Victory and Juanita, Hip 96 was offered by

Taylor Made.

Mamma Kimbo, a $120,000 Keeneland September yearling, won last year's Fantasy

(G2) during her brief career. Her resume reads 5-2-1-0, $242,250. She is out of

Grade 2-placed multiple stakes scorer Bag Lady Jane (Devil's Bag), a half-sister

to multiple stakes winner and Grade 2-placed sire Deputy Storm (Forestry). Mamma

Kimbo's second dam is two-time Canadian champion Deputy Jane West (Silver

Deputy).

Also selling for $1.2 million was current Grade 2 victress AUTHENTICITY

(Quiet American), purchased by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings fresh off her

third-place effort in Friday's Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1). A racing or broodmare

prospect by Three Chimneys Sales, agent, the six-year-old mare was listed as Hip

206.

Authenticity, a $250,000 Keeneland September yearling, didn't race until she

was four. She then missed her entire five-year-old season in 2012, but she has

made up for lost time this campaign. Authenticity landed the May 3 La Troienne

(G2) and July 20 Shuvee H. (G3) and placed in four stakes prior to the Distaff

-- the Ogden Phipps H. (G1), Personal Ensign H. (G1), Zenyatta and Rampart (G3).

She has compiled a record of 12-4-5-2, $883,362.

Authenticity is out of the unraced Deputy Minister mare Court of Appeal, and

her second dam is multiple Grade 3 winner Appealing Missy (Lypheor). She

descends from the same female line as Grade 2 vixens Rahys' Appeal (Rahy) and

Redaspen (Bianconi).

PALACE RUMOR (Royal Anthem), the stakes-winning dam of reigning Belmont S.

(G1) hero Palace Malice (Curlin), was knocked down to Katsumi Yoshida for $1.1

million. Cataloged as Hip 119, the 10-year-old mare from the Hill 'n' Dale

consignment is in foal on an April 23 cover to Mineshaft.

Successful in the 2006 Audubon Oaks and an earner of $111,833 from a 16-5-1-1

line, Palace Rumor is a sales veteran with no fewer than five previous

appearances at auction. She was last sold for a mere $20,000 at Keeneland

November in 2011.

Palace Rumor's first three foals are all winners, highlighted by classic

winner Palace Malice. The sophomore, who has already bankrolled $1,481,135, also

claims a victory in the Jim Dandy (G2) and placings in the Jockey Club Gold Cup

(G1), Blue Grass (G1) and Risen Star (G2). On Saturday, he finished sixth in the

Breeders' Cup Classic.

Palace Rumor is a half-sister to multiple stakes victors Maya's Storm (Stormy

Atlantic) and Jumpifyoudare (Jump Start). Their dam, the winning Red Ransom mare

Whisperifyoudare, is a relative of Grade 1-winning millionaire Rail Trip (Jump

Start).

Grade 3-winning broodmare STRIKE THE BELL (Mizzen Mast), in foal on an April

26 cover to War Front, was sold to Summer Wind Farm for $1.1 million. Sporting

Hip 163, the seven-year-old mare was offered by Bluegrass Thoroughbred Services

(John Stuart), agent.

Strike the Bell's biggest career victory came in the 2010 Noble Damsel (G3),

and she compiled a mark of 23-5-5-4, $301,112. Her first foal is a weanling

filly by Super Saver.

Out of the unraced Vesper Cat (Mountain Cat), Strike the Bell hails from the

immediate family of Grade 1 winners Hymn Book (Arch) and Data Link (War Front).

Hymn Book was fifth in his swan song in Friday's Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1).

Strike the Bell has been sold at auction three times previously, bringing

$150,000 at this sale in 2011 in her last visit to the ring.

It took until Hip 63 to venture into seven-figure territory, when Grade

1-winning broodmare HER SMILE (Include) sold to SF Bloodstock for $1.075

million. Adena Springs, which had purchased her for $1 million at this same sale

in 2011, consigned the five-year-old carrying her first foal to Ghostzapper on a

February 14 cover.

Her Smile scored her signature win in the 2011 Prioress (G1), and her quintet

of stakes placings is highlighted by the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1)

and Acorn S. (G1) during that same season. Out of the Capote mare Hepburn, the

well-named Her Smile ultimately retired with a record of 18-4-2-4, $462,314.

Pope's Whisper Hill paid $1 million for Grade 1 producer SPEED SUCCEEDS (Gone

West), a 12-year-old mare in foal to Street Cry on a May 21 cover. Gainesway,

agent, consigned her as Hip 154.

Speed Succeeds was a $1.45 million Keeneland September purchase by Live Oak

Plantation, but was eventually culled for only $42,000 at the 2010 Keeneland

January Sale.

The following year, her son Brilliant Speed (Dynaformer) won the Blue Grass

(G1) and Saranac (G3) and placed in the Belmont Stakes, Jamaica (G1) and

Breeders' Cup Turf. At four, he added two more Grade 1 placings in the Woodford

Reserve Turf Classic and Sword Dancer Invitational (G1), and he earned more than

$1.2 million. Speed Succeeds' next foal was Souper Speedy (Indian Charlie), the

runner-up in the 2011 Remsen (G2) who was awarded the victory in this June's

off-the-turf Jaipur.

Speed Succeeds is a half-sister to Canadian champion Serenading (A.P. Indy)

and Grade 1-placed multiple stakes winner Handpainted (A.P. Indy), the latter

the dam of Grade 3-placed stakes scorer Patena (Seeking the Gold). Speed

Succeeds is out of Grade 1-placed multiple stakes queen Daijin (Deputy

Minister), a full sister to Canadian Hall of Famer and 1997 Belmont hero Touch

Gold.

GOLDEN ARTEMIS (Malibu Moon), added to the sale as Hip 210 after the exploits

of her first foal My Conquestadory (Artie Schiller), was gaveled down to Denali

Stud, agent, for $1 million. Consigned by Paul Tackett, the seven-year-old mare

is carrying a full sibling to My Conquestadory on a May 19 cover.

My Conquestadory made a sensational career debut by defeating males in the

Summer S. (Can-G2), and followed up with a visually impressive tally in the

Alcibiades (G1). She lost her perfect mark after a wide-trip fourth, from post

14, in Friday's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1).

Twice stakes-placed, Golden Artemis is out of the winning Native Trinket

(Dove Hunt) and comes from the family of multiple Grade 2-winning sprint

millionaire Kelly Kip (Kipper Kelly).
