Three-time world champion sprinter Black Caviar will face as many as six

rivals at Moonee Valley Friday in the Group 1 William Reid.

A perfect 23-for-23, the superstar is poised to tie Hall of Famer Kingston

Town's record of 14 Australian Group 1 wins in the William Reid, which she won

in 2011.

Black Caviar came off a near eight-month layoff to score a three-peat in the

Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes February 16, and broke the course record

with her usual ease.

Among Black Caviar's challengers is Group 1 Oakleigh Plate Handicap

third-place finisher Spirit of Boom, but trainer Tony Gollan is realistic of his

charge's chances to take down the favorite.

"(Black Caviar) is a fantastic mare and when you race against her you're

generally resigned to the fact that you'll finish one place further back than

where you were going to finish because she's just so dominant," he told Sky

Sports.

"If you're a rival trainer with a rival horse, you'd prefer her not to be

there, but she's great for racing and if we can run second to her that would be

fantastic."

While it has been generally assumed that the William Reid would be Black

Caviar's final start in Melbourne before similar farewell stops in Sydney and

Brisbane, co-owner Gary Wilkie has not ruled out further runs for the mare.

"We haven't got that far at all," Wilkie told the Herald Sun. "It's

one day at a time. We haven't even got to Friday yet. We'll see how she pulls up

and go from there."

Black Caviar's stablemate Karuta Queen is also nominated to the Maurice

McCarten at Rosehill Saturday, and could run in that spot instead of the William

Reid depending on the weather.

The about six-furlong William Reid is scheduled to go off at 6:55 a.m. (EDT)

Friday morning.
