Bold Start likely for Florida Derby
Trainer Kenny McPeek likely will saddle BOLD START (Jump Start) in next
Saturday's $1 million Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park. McPeek had been
pointing BIRDBIRDISTHEWORD (Pure Prize) toward the nine-furlong event, but said
the timing is better for Bold Start, who exits a runner-up effort in the 7
1/2-furlong Hutcheson S. (G2) on March 3.
"I just think 'Birdbird' needs some more time," McPeek said.
Birdbirdistheword finished fifth, beaten 7 1/2 lengths, in the Louisiana
Derby (G2) on March 10 at Fair Grounds in his first start since winning the
lucrative Delta Jackpot S. (G3) on December 1 at Delta Downs.
"Bold Start has been doing great," McPeek said. "He's coming up to the race
great and he's ready to stretch out."
McPeek said Manoel Cruz will ride Bold Start in the Florida Derby.
