Cy Fair gives Weaver a first Breeders' Cup win in Juvenile Turf Sprint

Although he holds the distinction of being one of the few American trainers to have won a race at Royal Ascot, trainer George Weaver had not, until Friday, won a Breeders' Cup race. He can thank the two-year-old filly Cy Fair for the latter.
A close relation to Crimson Advocate, who Weaver trained to a Queen Mary (G2) victory at Royal Ascot, Cy Fair proved a fast filly in her own right when scoring by three parts of a length in the $920,000 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1) under Irad Ortiz Jr.
The 5-1 second choice in a field of 12, Cy Fair was in between rivals in the second flight, chasing pacesetter Schwarzenegger down the backside. Advancing into second on the far turn, Cy Fair eventually overtook Schwarzenegger, passing the eighth pole, and held off a late surge from European invaders Brussels and Aspect Island, who finished second and third.
Owned in partnership by Medallion Racing, Swinbank Stables, Joey Platts, and Mark Stanton, Cy Fair covered five furlongs on firm ground in :56.02. She paid $12.
Following Aspect Island under the wire were Obliteration, Schwarzenegger, Later Than Planned, Lennilu, 3-1 favorite True Love, Intricate Spirit, Mission Central, Royal Testament, and Havana Anna.
A daughter of Not This Time, Cy Fair has now won three of four starts. A 3 1/4-length winner on debut at Saratoga in July, Cy Fair subsequently finished second by a neck in the Bolton Landing S. at Saratoga, which is restricted to fillies, as an odds-on choice.
Despite that setback, Cy Fair also went favored in her next start, the Algonquin S. at Woodbine. She won that dash, which was also open to males, handsomely by 3 1/4 lengths.
Bred in Kentucky by Marc Keller and most recently sold for $185,000 at OBS in April, Cy Fair is out of Remarqued, an Arch half-sister to the aforementioned Crimson Advocate.
"She looks fast enough. So I think we will be considering it," said Weaver when asked whether Royal Ascot might be on Cy Fair's agenda next year. "We'll see how she comes out of this and probably give her a little break and map out a plan for next year. But she seems like she's good enough to do it if we want to.
"There's really not a huge regimen of turf sprints in the United States for the next few months. I think we're going to evaluate how she does. I'll talk with everybody."
