Super Corredora sped to the lead at the break and upset rivals in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) on Friday at Del Mar, holding 3-2 favorite Explora safe by three-quarters of a length in her stakes debut. A dominant frontrunning scorer when stretching to two turns on Oct. 11, the John Sadler-trained daughter of Gun Runner became the first last-out maiden winner to capture the Juvenile Fillies in the race’s 41-year history.

“She’s a filly we had really high hopes for,” Sadler said. “We always expected she could get two turns. She has a beautiful stride.”

Regular rider Hector I. Berrios earned his first Breeders’ Cup race win, and Super Corredora was overlooked as the 8.80-1 co-fifth choice among nine runners.

Owned by Spartan Equine Racing, West Point Thoroughbreds, Robert C. Gardiner, and Michael Olszewski, Super Corredora probably notched champion two-year-old filly honors in a wide-open division and picked up 30 points toward a Kentucky Oaks (G1) berth next spring.

“(Sadler) told me to be confident,” Berrios. “And now I’m very excited for this moment.”

The Kentucky-bred bay filly broke sharply from her outside post and established opening fractions in :22.42, :45.63, and 1:10.15 on a clear lead. She led by a length turning for home and dug in gamely to win comfortably under the wire, finishing 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.71.

Explora stalked up close before advancing to a threatening position but lacked the necessary kick in the stretch, winding up three lengths clear of Percy’s Bar, who overcame bumping into the rail in the upper stretch to edge Meaning by a head for fourth. It was another half-length to Tommy Jo, who sustained her first setback following Grade 1 wins in the Alcibiades (via DQ) and Spinaway (G1).

The second-through-fifth place finishers earned points on a 15-9-6-3 scale in the Road to the Kentucky Oaks qualifier.

Bottle of Rouge, La Ville Luminiere, La Wally, and Iron Orchard completed the order.

Bred by Woodford Thoroughbreds, Super Corredora sold for $400,000 as a yearling at the 2024 Keeneland September sale. She’s the first stakes winner from Super Simple, a daughter of 2011 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Super Saver, and Super Corredora counts the stakes-winning Pulpit mare Simplify as her second maternal dam.

Her improving form is easy to appreciate. Fifth, when making her first outing at five furlongs in mid-July, Super Corredora followed with a runner-up in a 6 1/2-furlong test at Del Mar three weeks later. She graduated sharply at Santa Anita, leading all the way in an 8 1/4-length tally.

“It didn’t go smooth this summer,” Sadler said.” The first time she drew the one and didn’t really get it. She improved in the second, and she’s improved every time. We’re in our own backyard. We weren’t sure we were going to run, but we trained her a little bit here, and she trained well, and here we are.”
