Business up in all categories at Barretts January Mixed

The one-day Barretts January Mixed Sale concluded Monday with

across-the-board gains.

At the end of trading, 224 horses sold for $1,994,900, an increase of 26.6

percent over last year when 184 head sold for $1,536,100. The average improved 4

percent, from $8,348 to $8,683, while the median rose 18.9 percent, from $4,500

to $5,350.

Topping the sale were a yearling colt and a juvenile colt, both of which sold

for $70,000.

Solis/Litt, agent for Patrick Keogh, were the winning bidders on the April 3

yearling colt, a California-bred son of Midnight Lute produced by Bellastrega

(Deputy Minister). Consigned by Sam Hendricks, agent for the Edward Mercaldo

dispersal, Hip No. 47 counts as a second dam Grade 2-placed Secretly

(Secretariat). His third dam was Grade 2 winner Chieftan's Command (Turn and

Count).

Carl O'Callaghan, agent for Super Horse, bought Hip 293, a Florida-bred son

of Majestic Warrior, for $70,000. Consigned by H & E Ranch, the juvenile colt

was reared by Not Affiliated (Tale of the Cat) and previously sold for for

$37,000 as OBS August yearling and $47,000 as a yearling at the Arizona

Thoroughbred Breeders' Association Fall Mixed Sale in October.

The colt descends from multiple champion Next Move (Bull Lea) and her dam,

1939 juvenile filly champion Now What (Chance Play).
