California Chrome

drilled six furlongs in 1:13 4/5 at Los Alamitos Saturday, turning in his

final major move for next Saturday's Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby.

By trainer Art Sherman's design, the work was a steadier tour of the oval

than the star colt's blistering 1:10 1/5 posted between races last Saturday.

This time, the blinkered California Chrome took to the track during morning

training hours.

Although still sweating up beforehand, he projected a more controlled image

beneath regular rider Victor Espinoza. California Chrome's ears were pricked as

he crossed the wire, and his final time tied for the second-fastest of five

works at the distance on the fast track.

"I thought it was perfect," Sherman said. "I didn't want to go as fast as he

did last week -- that was just kind of a wake-up call for him, put him more on

the bit.

"This way, I wanted to have a little bit more endurance into him today."

Sherman caught him galloping out seven furlongs in 1:27 2/5 and the mile in

1:43.

"I'm really happy because we have to run a mile and an eighth (in the Penn

Derby)," the trainer noted, "but he's kind of a push-button horse.

"The last eighth of a mile he went in :12, and he didn't even move on him, so

that makes me very encouraged because that's where the money is -- the last

eighth of a mile."

The Penn Derby will mark California Chrome's first start since his Triple

Crown bid ended with a dead-heat fourth in the June 7 Belmont Stakes. The

California-bred is set to fly out Tuesday, and after settling into Parx, plans

call for him to school in the gate and in the paddock on Friday.
