Shoemaker Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) winner CASTLEDALE (Ire) (Peintre Celebre)

and Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) hero SINGLETARY (Sultry Song) will renew a budding

rivalry in Sunday's $400,000 Eddie Read H. (G1). An excellent field of seven has

been entered for the 1 1/8-mile test over the Jimmy Durante Turf Course, and Del

Mar will also offer the $250,000 San Diego H. (G2) earlier on the program.

In the Eddie Read, Castledale will be seeking his third straight stakes win

for trainer Jeff Mullins. A Grade 1 winner on the main track last season, the

four-year-old colt is now committed to the grass and captured the San Francisco Breeders' Cup

Mile H. (G2) at Bay Meadows before earning his prestigious Shoemaker

triumph at Hollywood Park. Rene Douglas rides the 121-pound highweight.

Singletary won the Arcadia H. (G2) two starts back and didn't run his best race

when fourth in the Shoemaker last time. The Don Chatlos Jr.-trained

five-year-old captured the 2003 La Jolla H. (G3) at Del Mar and breaks from the

rail on Sunday with David Flores.

Charles Whittingham Memorial H. (G1) victor SWEET RETURN (GB) (Elmaamul) is

another dangerous contender. A two-time Grade 1 winner for trainer Ron McAnally,

Sweet Return finished a close third in last year's Eddie Read and has earned

more than $1.2 million. Alex Solis pilots the five-year-old. Another contender

is Grade 2 winner A TO THE Z (Benchmark).

The complete field, from the rail with riders and weights, is Singletary,

120; Sweet Return, 120; FOURTY NINERS SON (Distorted Humor), Corey Nakatani,

114; A to the Z, Garrett Gomez, 118; FAST AND FURIOUS (Fr) (Singspiel [Ire]),

Victor Espinoza, 117; QSAR (Ger) (Tiger Hill), Tyler Baze, 112; and Castledale.

In the San Diego, defending champion CHOCTAW NATION (Louis Quatorze) will

seek his first win since last year's San Diego against five rivals. Trained by

Mullins, Choctaw Nation finished third in the Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) earlier

this year and will have regular rider Victor Espinoza in the saddle for the 1

1/16-mile main track event. Mervyn LeRoy H. (G2) conqueror ACE BLUE (Brz) (Coax

Me Clyde) and Grade 2 winner HARVARD AVENUE (You and I) are both win candidates.

Choctaw Nation leads the post parade under a 115-pound impost and will be followed

by KEEP ON PUNCHING (Silver Deputy), Pat Valenzuela, 114, BEAR IN THE WOODS

(Formal Gold), Nakatani, 113; Harvard Avenue, Gomez, 115; Ace Blue, Flores, 117;

and PREACHINATTHEBAR (Silver Charm), Mike Smith, 115.
