Vinery Stables acquired a filly from the first crop of Grade 2 hero Congrats

(A.P. Indy) for the top price of $38,000 at Thursday's third and final Open

session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's August Yearling Sale. Consigned

by Abbie Road Farm (Lisa McGreevy), agent, the filly named SCARLET STARLET was

cataloged as Hip No. 907.

The dark bay Florida-bred is the second registered foal from the winning Red

Hot Star (Tabasco Cat), who is herself a half-sister to the stakes-placed

Airizon (Boston Harbor). The yearling's second dam is eight-time stakes winner

Airistar (Prospective Star).

On Thursday, 171 horses were sold for a total of $1,061,900, a plunge of 49.1

percent from the $2,088,200 realized by 204 yearlings at the comparable session

last year. The average dropped 39.3 percent, from $10,236 to $6,210, and the

median price declined 36.4 percent, from $5,500 to $3,500. The buyback

percentage was 25.6 percent, compared to 29.9 percent a year ago.

For the three Open sessions, 549 yearlings brought $3,879,900, down 38.8

percent from 2008, when 628 horses grossed $6,341,700. The average fell 30

percent, from $10,098 to $7,067, while the median dipped 27.3 percent, from

$5,500 to $4,000. The buyback percentage was 27.4 percent; it was 31.6 percent

last year.

During Monday's Selected Yearlings Sale, 113 yearlings brought a total of

$3,708,500, a 34.2 percent decline from 2008, when $5,633,000 was realized by

the exact same number of horses. The average likewise fell 34.2 percent, from

$49,850 to $32,819, while the median plummeted 37.5 percent, from $40,000 to

$25,000. The buyback percentage was 38.3 percent, compared to 43.5 percent at

last year's comparable session.

The sales topper was Hip 108, a filly by Medaglia d'Oro consigned by

Summerfield (Francis & Barbara Vanlangendonck), agent, who sold to Live Oak

Plantation for $275,000. The Florida-bred bay is out of the stakes-winning Phone

Trick mare Lolabell.
