Coronation winner could lose crown after testing positive

Last updated: 8/4/06 7:19 PM

Cheveley Park Stud's NANNINA (Medicean) could be stripped of her success in the June 23 Coronation S.

(Eng-G1) at Royal

Ascot after a positive post-race drug test. Trainer John Gosden revealed that

the three-year-old, who will run in Saturday's Nassau S. (Eng-G1) at Goodwood, was found

to have a trace of a "routine" drug in her system after her success in the mile

contest.

"She was on a well-established routine of veterinary treatment prior to

the race," Gosden told PA Sport. "It was nothing particularly out of the

ordinary at all, it was run of the mill. At the moment, it appears that a tiny

trace of that may have remained in her system, but that is on one test and there

now has to be another one done. [The medication involved] is something that is

routinely used...and it is very strange that, with the long withdrawal period,

it has stayed in her. It is a little bit of a mystery right now. It is certainly

nothing nefarious and it is a pretty mundane thing, but it is still obviously

particularly worrying."

The Horseracing Regulatory Authority will nominate a

laboratory for the second test, which, if positive, would mean certain

disqualification and the awarding of the race to Jaber Abdullah's runner-up

Flashy Wings (Zafonic).
