For trainer Teresa Pompay, CURRENCY SWAP (High Cotton) made the trek

from the Jersey Shore to Saratoga Race Course worthwhile.

Currency Swap had caught the eye of the clockers while training at

Monmouth Park, and Pompay elected to send the unraced juvenile to

Saratoga for his debut.

"The clockers told me he's probably the best 2-year-old they've seen

work down there," Pompay said. "That gave me a little more confidence."

He justified that confidence in Saturday's 3RD race, and in the

process, added his name to the New York Watch roster. Click

Quickest out of the chute in the 6 1/2-furlong race, Currency Swap

dropped back to fourth while racing extremely wide up the backstretch,

ranged up to contend for the lead on the far turn, quickly put away

favored Takes the Gold (Corinthian), and ran clear to a six-length

victory. Africanist (Johannesburg) got up by a head over Takes the Gold

for second.

Currency Swap, who paid $21.80 at odds of 9-1, negotiated the distance in

1:17 on the fast track. He was assigned a 108 BRIS Speed rating.

"I was a little surprised he was so close to the lead and broke so sharply,

because he really hasn't been doing that," Pompay said. "But they change when

they come to the race, (with) the whole adrenaline thing."

Pompay trains Currency Swap for Klaravich Stables and William H. Lawrence,

for whom she oversees 10 horses, all at Monmouth Park. She said the colt is

likely to return to Saratoga for the Hopeful (G1) on September 5.

Currency Swap is the second winner out of Echo Bluff (Pine Bluff), an unraced

full sister to Your Bluffing, who captured a pair of route stakes at Laurel

Park. High Cotton, Currency Swap's sire, took the 2006 Northern Dancer (G3) at

Churchill Downs.
