Decision pending on Street Sense

Last updated: 5/29/07 5:07 PM

James Tafel's STREET SENSE (Street Cry [Ire]), a convincing winner of the

133rd Kentucky Derby (G1), galloped 1 1/4 miles at Churchill Downs on Tuesday

under exercise rider Mark Cutler.

The Carl Nafzger trainee is scheduled to work beneath the Twin Spires on

Wednesday at approximately 7 a.m. (EDT), and Nafzger said the results of that

move -- his first work since finishing a close second to CURLIN (Smart Strike)

in the Preakness S. (G1) on May 19 -- will factor in the decision on whether or

not the Kentucky Derby winner runs in the Belmont S. (G1).

"This will be a work we can go either way with," Nafzger said. "Whatever Mr.

Tafel's decision is, we can come off of that work and go either way. He's doing

good and he's getting around there okay, but you've just got to see where you

are."

Tafel and Nafzger are expected to announce their decision on Thursday. The

final jewel of the Triple Crown is scheduled for June 9 at Belmont Park, and the

1 1/2-mile "Test of Champions" could set the stage for a rubber match between

Street Sense and Curlin.

Meanwhile, Preakness winner Curlin was reported to be doing well, one day

after breezing five furlongs in 1:03 1/5 on Monday at Churchill Downs. Assistant

trainer Scott Blasi said the Steve Asmussen-trained chestnut walked under the

shedrow on Tuesday.

"He came out of the work super," Blasi said.

Curlin is scheduled to return to the track for a gallop at approximately 6:15

a.m. (EDT) on Wednesday. The colt, whose only defeat in five career starts was a

third-place effort in the Kentucky Derby, is scheduled to work again on Monday

and travel to New York on Tuesday.
