Delta Flower tries two turns in Summertime Oaks

Last updated: 6/18/14 6:21 PM

Delta Flower will attempt to carry her speed two turns when she lines up for

Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000

Summertime Oaks at Santa Anita. The Arkansas-bred daughter of A.P. Delta

will square off against seven rivals in the 1 1/16-mile test.

After capturing a maiden event and the six-furlong Rainbow Miss for state-breds

at Oaklawn Park, Delta Flower was sold and transferred to Hall of Fame trainer

Jerry Hollendorfer. She stretched her win streak to three while making her

California bow in the May 17 Angel's Flight at Santa Anita, leading wire to wire

for a neck decision in the seven-furlong event, and her pedigree is encouraging

for added ground -- Delta Flower hails from a mare by El Prado. Corey Nakatani

retains the mount on the front-runner.

Jojo Warrior will also stretch out in ground following a third as the

favorite in the six-furlong Miss Preakness on May 16. Conditioned by Hall of

Famer Bob Baffert, the Pioneerof the Nile filly won her lone start at two,

taking a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight at Del Mar by 3 1/4 lengths, and

came back from a lengthy hiatus with a good second in the April 12 Instant

Racing at Oaklawn Park. Jojo Warrior proceeded to finish fifth against a deeper

field in the Grade 3 Eight Belles before shipping to Pimlico for her last

outing. The stalker will break from the rail with new rider Martin Garcia.

Stakes winner Arethusa opened 2014 with a third in the Grade 1 Las Virgenes

and will attempt to get back on track for Eoin Harty following a pair of

unplaced finishes in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks and Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan.

Mike Smith takes over the reins aboard the daughter of A.P. Indy.

Remington Park stakes queen La Mejor Fiesta has invaded from the Midwest for

trainer Wesley Ward following a seventh in the Black-Eyed Susan. Hollendorfer

will also send out Grade 2-placed juvenile Stop Smiling, a recent turf

allowance/optional claiming scorer at Golden Gate Fields who will receive a

rider switch to Gary Stevens, and maiden winner Front Range will provide Baffert

with a pair of starters as well.

Earlier on the program, nine three-year-old males are set for the $75,000

Singletary

at a mile on turf. Home Run Kitten produced a couple of stakes placing earlier

this season for David Hofmans, finishing a close third in the March 22 Pasadena

and a neck second in the April 19 La Puente, and the Kitten's Joy colt exits a

confidence-building allowance/optional claiming score over the course on May 18.

Joe Talamo will be back up on the likely favorite.

Stakes winners Aotearoa and Forever Juanito are also entered.
