Deputy Daney stays perfect in Jimmy Winkfield

Last updated: 1/18/10 5:20 PM

Matthew Hand's DEPUTY DANEY (Officer) shipped from Philadelphia Park to

Aqueduct Racetrack boasting an unblemished record, and left Monday afternoon

with his first stakes victory after taking the 26th running of the $63,700

Jimmy

Winkfield S.

Breaking from the rail beneath Angel Arroyo, the Cathal Lynch sophomore vied

for the early lead with 3-5 favorite Citizen's Arrest (More Than Ready) through

an opening quarter in :22 3/5. Deputy Daney spurted away on the turn while

reeling off a half-mile in :46 1/5, and maintained a 1 1/4-length margin over

Red Bengal (Hold That Tiger) at the wire. The winner completed six furlongs in

1:11 4/5 over the good inner track, returning $16, $6 and $6 as the 7-1 third

choice in the five-horse field.

"When he broke I felt like I had a lot of horse, so I tried to save ground,"

Arroyo said.  "I saw the five horse (Citizen's Arrest) go to the lead, so I

just relaxed and tried to save some horse for the end."

"We were stuck in the one hole," Lynch said. "We weren't really sure what we

were going to do. He's just a fast little horse."

Red Bengal, also making his stakes debut, pulled 5 3/4 lengths clear of Mia's

Angel (Even the Score)in third. Citizen's Arrest and Love Who (Not for Love)

rounded out the order of finish in the strung-out field.

Now a perfect three-for-three, Deputy Daney has bankrolled $92,400. A debut

maiden winner at Philly in September, he followed up with a narrow entry-level

allowance score at the same venue in October.

The bay gelding was bred by Eico Stable in Florida and purchased for $35,000

as an OBS April two-year-old in training. Out of the unraced Cure the Blues mare

No Serenading, he has a pair of younger half-siblings, an unnamed juvenile colt

by Pomeroy and a yearling filly by Yonaguska.

Lynch indicated that a return to Aqueduct is likely in his Deputy Daney's

future.

"We're not sure if he can go two turns, but we'll probably come back in the

(six-furlong) Fred Capossela (on March 6)," Lynch said.
