Dogwood now accepting nominations for Dominion Award

Last updated: 5/5/10 1:43 PM

Nominations for the 18th annual Dogwood Dominion Award are now being accepted

to honor an unsung hero in the Thoroughbred racing industry.

Nominees should be individuals who have had a positive effect on the

racing/breeding environment in which they are involved. This year's winner will

be honored at a luncheon on July 28 at the Saratoga Reading Rooms and presented

with a $5,000 check and a bronze statue of Dominion. Judges for this award are

Anne Campbell, Jay Hovdey and Todd Pletcher.

"We've had a parking lot attendant, racing steward, track photographer,

jockey's agent, horse rescuer -- the list goes on," said Cot Campbell, Dogwood

Stable President. "We've awarded $85,000 since 1993 and our luncheon at Saratoga

is an eagerly awaited event. Our industry is faced with so many dilemmas and

difficulties each day, and it's refreshing to be able to take a step back and

honor one of the good guys."

The award was inspired by multiple stakes winner Dominion, who was campaigned

by Dogwood Stable in the 1970s and then went on to become a five-time champion

sire in England. Upon Dominion's death in 1993, Campbell created the award to

recognize the industry's unsung heroes -- the behind-the-scenes men and women

who work to create a positive influence in their work environment.

Mail or fax nominations by June 16 to: Mary Jane Howell, Dogwood Stable, P.O.

Box 1549, Aiken, SC, 29802. Fax: 803-642-2747.
