Occupying the previous slot of the St Leger Yearling Sale, Doncaster

Bloodstock Sales's St Leger festival Sale gets underway Wednesday as the town

builds up to its big day on the local track on Saturday. With the premier

auction now firmly established in late August, this spinoff provides a focus

over the next two evenings after racing for those wanting to hunt for bargains

such as Penny's Gift (GB) (Tobougg [Ire]). Purchased for just 10,000 guineas 12

months ago, the Richard Hannon-trained filly was runner-up in both the Lowther

S. (Eng-G2) and Albany S. (Eng-G3) this year.

Of the 161 lots on offer, there are the progeny of leading sires Cape Cross

(Ire), Invincible Spirit, Marju and Muhtathir (GB), and a healthy proportion

from the first crop of Antonius Pius, Arakan, Avonbridge, Monsieur Bond,

Pastoral Pursuits and Trade Fair (GB). Lots to note include Low Gallop Stables'

Hip No. 32, an Avonbridge half-sister to the smart stakes performer Vintage

Premium (Forzando [GB]); Hip 43, a half-brother by Pastoral Pursuits to

stakes-placed juvenile Caranbola(Lucky Story) from the draft of Stringston Farm;

New England Stud's Hip 64, a son of Starcraft (NZ) whose half-siblings include

the 2003 St Leger Yearling S. winner Cape Fear (Cape Cross [Ire]) and this

year's smart juvenile Exceptional Art (Exceed and Excel); Cloverdale

Bloodstock's Hip 84, a half-sister by Xaar to the recent Sandown Sprint S.

(Eng-G3) scorer Ancien Regime (King's Best) and Hip 109, another offering from

New England Stud by Antonius Pius from the extended family of this year's Irish

Oaks (Ire-G1) heroine Moonstone (Dalakhani).
