Kaleem Shah Inc.'s Dortmund prevailed after a stretch-long duel with Mr. Z

and Firing Line in Saturday's Grade 1, $500,000

Los Alamitos Futurity, just getting his head down on the line to post a new

track record for 1 1/16 miles in 1:40.86 over the fast Los Alamitos dirt.

With the win, the Bob Baffert pupil earned 10 points toward a starting berth

in the 2015 Kentucky Derby via the "Road to the Kentucky Derby" series of races.

Dortmund entered the Futurity -- previously named the Hollywood, then the

CashCall, Futurity -- after romping in his initial two starts by a combined 12

1/2 lengths. The early favorite for the 2015 Kentucky Derby, it was no surprise

to see him go off as the 3-5 choice against his four rivals with jockey Martin

Garcia aboard.

Garcia settled Dortmund into an outside stalking spot as Mr. Z and Firing

Line duked it out on the front end through splits of :21 4/5, :45 1/5 and 1:09

3/5. Dortmund ranged up to the outside of that pair rounding the turn and

suddenly the race everyone was rooting for was on.

All three were motoring in tandem down the center of the track, with Mr. Z

repeatedly lugging out and bumping Firing Line. Dortmund appeared to be hanging

late and just finally got up to be on even terms in the shadow of the wire. The

trio hit the line together, but the photo managed to discern Dortmund in front

over Firing Line with Mr. Z another nose back in third.

Dortmund is now three-for-three in his career, having broken his maiden at

Santa Anita Park on November 2 before traveling cross-country to take a

Churchill Downs optional claimer 27 days later. Returning to Baffert's California-base for the Los Alamitos Futurity, the Big Brown colt has

now banked $359,400 lifetime.

Bred in Kentucky by Emilie Gerlinde Fojan, Dortmund sold twice at auction. He

brought $90,000 as a Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling last year and then was

purchased for $140,000 as a Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Two-Year-Old in Training in

May.

The two-year-old colt is the first stakes scorer out of the Grade 3-placed

stakes-winning Tale of the Cat mare Our Josephina. His third dam is 1977

champion Lakeville Miss, who would go on in the breeding shed to produce Grade 1

hero Mogambo and Grade 1 runner-up Sea Breezer. This female family is also

responsible for 1942 Preakness second Requested.
