Dryfly will miss Triple Crown

Smarty Jones S. winner DRYFLY (Jump Start) exited his ninth-place effort in Saturday's Southwest S. (G3) with an injury in his left front knee and will be sidelined through the Triple Crown. "He has what I would term an incomplete fracture," trainer Lynn Whiting told Daily Racing Form. "It's just the start of a problem. And it's something that probably, I would say, is going to require time rather than surgery. I expect he'll be out of training for 90 to 120 days. We sent the images to Dr. (Larry) Bramlage, and we're going to rely on his expertise. But I don't envision it being a surgery case. I think it's something that is just going to require time."

An allowance winner at Churchill Downs in his 2009 finale, the Charles Cella-owned
colt opened his three-year-old campaign with a convincing 2 1/4-length win in
the one-mile Smarty Jones on January 18. Sent off the 3-1 second
choice in the Southwest, the Kentucky-bred bay raced within striking range until
retreating at the top of the Oaklawn Park stretch.
"It's not something that's ever been there before," Whiting said. "It kind of
explains his race to you."
The conditioner hopes to get Dryfly back to the races this fall.
