During's first winner romps at Philly

Last updated: 7/5/08 9:11 PM

Multiple Grade 2 victor DURING (Cherokee Run) registered his first winner as

a freshman sire when During Deputy captured Saturday's 3RD race at Philadelphia

Park. A first-time starter trained by Frank Petrozzo and piloted by Eddie King

Jr., the dark bay juvenile chased the pace, took command turning into the

stretch and never looked back. During Deputy ultimately crossed the wire 6 1/4

lengths in front, stopping the teletimer in :52 3/5 for 4 1/2 furlongs on the

fast track.

During's tactical speed and resolute determination carried him to four graded

stakes victories. After placing in the Sir Barton S. and Northern Dancer S., the

Bob Baffert trainee broke through with a battling score in the 2003 Swaps S.

(G2). Later in his sophomore campaign, he captured the Jerome H. (G2) and posted

a hard-fought decision in the Discovery H. (G3). The dark bay added the San

Fernando S. (G2) to his resume the next year, when he came again with his usual

pluck after being headed. During just missed in the Strub S. (G2) and also

placed in the San Diego H. (G2) and Del Mar Breeders' Cup H. (G2). He compiled a

22-6-3-4 record with a bankroll to the tune of $822,364.

Produced by the multiple stakes-placed Blading Saddle (Blade), During hails

from the family of ill-fated Kentucky Derby (G1) star Barbaro (Dynaformer).

The

eight-year-old During stands for $5,000, live foal, at Claiborne Farm near

Paris, Kentucky.
