Glen Hill Farm's homebred Enterprising produced a blistering, last-to-first

rally in Thursday's $116,700

Oceanside Stakes on opening day at Del Mar, becoming the first stakes winner

over the brand new turf course. Under Hall of Famer Mike Smith, the Tom Proctor

trainee nailed Argyle Cut in the final stride.

Enterprising was dispatched as the 5-2 favorite in light of his perfect

three-for-three record at a flat mile. The start was momentarily delayed when

Aotearoa pushed his gate open, but the handler retained a firm grip. Aotearoa did

not get out and quickly passed the vet check. Once that was settled, then Sammy

Mandeville, who drew in as the lone also-eligible, broke through the gate

entirely and scampered for a few strides before jockey Rafael Bejarano got him

back around to line up again.

When the Oceanside field was truly on its way, Home School grabbed the early

lead and set splits of :23, :46 and 1:10 1/5. Love Rules All prompted the issue,

with G. G. Ryder also close up. Argyle Cut was parked off the pace about midpack, while

Enterprising was content to lope at the rear of the 11-horse field.

Home School continued to show the way until midstretch, when Argyle

Cut delivered what appeared to be a well-timed move. Collaring the

pacesetter and edging clear, Argyle Cut was on the verge of his first career

stakes victory.

But Enterprising was taking flight wider out on the expanded course, and his

late flourish was irresistible. The Elusive Quality colt thrust his neck in front

in a final time of 1:33 4/5 to score his third stakes win, and underscore just

how effective his kick is at the one-mile trip.

Before his fans could collect the $7.80 win mutuel, however, the stewards got

involved. Trainer Robertino Diodoro lodged an objection, alleging that

Enterprising had interfered with his runner, Patriots Rule, and forced him to

steady in the stretch. The stewards disallowed that claim upon review, ruling

that Enterprising was faultless. They did find, however, that Texas Ryano caused

the incident by coming out into the path of Patriots Rule. Accordingly, Texas

Ryano was disqualified from his original finishing position, eighth, and placed

10th, behind Patriots Rule.

Runner-up Argyle Cut was 1 1/4 lengths on top of Home School, who held tough

for third in a photo with Sammy Mandeville. Next in the official order of finish

came G. G. Ryder, Love

Rules All, Forever Juanito, Aotearoa, Patriots Rule, Texas Ryano and Majestic

Kitten. Yard Line and Diamond Bachelor were scratched in favor of allowances on

Saturday -- the 3RD and 8TH races, respectively.

Enterprising has now earned $244,650 from his 8-4-1-2 record, with all of his wins

coming at a mile on turf. After breaking his maiden at Hollywood Park last

November, he made a successful stakes debut in the December 28 Eddie Logan at

Santa Anita. The bay headed north to try Golden Gate Fields' Tapeta, but settled

for second in the January 18 California Derby at 1 1/16 miles and third in the 1

1/8-mile El Camino Real Derby on February 15. Enterprising found his optimal

conditions in the March 22 Pasadena back at Santa Anita, where he got up in the

nick of time. Last seen in the April 19 La Puente, he rallied into contention,

but perhaps found the ninth furlong a bridge too far and retreated to third.

The Florida-bred is the first registered foal from the A.P. Indy mare Indy

Blaze, who is a half-sister to English/Irish highweight Stravinsky as well as to

Grade 1-placed stakes winner Moscow Ballet, both sires. Indy Blaze is also a

full sister to Group 3-placed Augustusthestrong. Enterprising's second dam is

Grade 1 star Fire the Groom. With his fourth dam being 1966 Kentucky Oaks queen

Native Street, he hails from the family of Grade/Group 1 winners Royal and

Regal, Dowsing, Pearl of Love and Jam Alley.
