Eskendereya, Lookin at Lucky head Pool 3 Future market
ESKENDEREYA (Giant's Causeway), a dazzling 8 1/2-length winner of the
Fountain of Youth S. (G2) at Gulfstream Park, and LOOKIN AT LUCKY (Smart Strike), America's reigning
two-year-old champion and
winner of Oaklawn Park's Rebel S. (G2) in his 2010 debut, loom as the likely
favorites heading into the third and final three-day pool of Churchill Downs'
2010 Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW).
Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia has installed the Todd
Pletcher-trained Eskendereya as the 5-1 favorite and Lookin at Lucky, who is
bidding to provide Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert with his fourth Kentucky
Derby victory, as the 6-1 second choice in his morning line odds for the 24
wagering interests in KDFW Pool 3. But the Mutuel Field, which includes all
three-year-olds other than the 23 individual horses in the pool, is expected to
again attract strong support from Future Wager fans. The "All Others" bet, the
favorite in each of the previous 2010 KDFW pools, is the 8-1 third choice in the
Pool 3 morning line.
Wagering in Pool 3 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager at racetracks,
satellite wagering sites and advance deposit wagering outlets, which include
TwinSpires.com, will open at noon (all times EDT), on Friday. Betting on the
pool is scheduled to conclude on Sunday at 6 p.m.
The Kentucky Derby Future Wager provides fans with an opportunity to bet
weeks in advance on contenders for the Kentucky Derby (G1) at odds that could be more attractive than those they would receive on the
day of the race. All KDFW pools include exacta wagering. The Derby Future bet is
a $2 minimum win wager. The minimum wager for a straight exacta, which
requires the bettor to select the Kentucky Derby's top two finishers in the
exact order of finish, is also $2, while the minimum for exacta boxes and wheels
is $1. There are no scratches and no refunds in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager.
If Churchill Downs determines that injury, illness or other circumstance will
prevent the participation of any individual betting interest in the Kentucky
Derby, wagering on that interest will be suspended.
The wagering interests for Pool 3 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager are
dominated by the stable of four-time Eclipse Award-winner Todd Pletcher, who
trains a record seven horses in the pool, one more than the previous record
established in 2010's second three-day pool. Along with Eskendereya, Pletcher
trains AIKENITE (Yes It's True) (50-1), CONNEMARA (Giant's Causeway) (20-1), DISCREETLY
MINE (Mineshaft) (20-1), INTERACTIF (Broken Vow)
(20-1), RULE (Roman Ruler) (20-1) and SUPER SAVER (Maria's Mon) (20-1). Pletcher is seeking his first
victory in the America's greatest race.
Interactif is one of eight new individual betting interests in the pool.
Others include ICE BOX (Pulpit) and PLEASANT PRINCE (Indy King), the one-two finishers in last week's
Florida Derby (G1); Gotham S. (G3) winner AWESOME ACT (Awesome Again); Sham S. (G3) winner
ALPHIE'S BET (Tribal Rule); MAKE MUSIC FOR ME (Bernstein), SCHOOLYARD DREAMS
(Stephen Got Even) and HOMEBOYKRIS (Roman Ruler).
The 23 individual wagering interests in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager pools
are chosen by a panel that includes Brad Free, Southern California correspondent
for Daily Racing Form; Mike Watchmaker, DRF's national handicapper; and John
Asher, Churchill Downs vice president of racing communications.
