Face Value filly highlights Adelaide Magic Millions

Prominent South Australian stud Lindsay Park has been home to some unheralded

but extremely effective stallions, and Red Ransom freshman Face Value could be

the latest. On Tuesday, Mark Pilkington, who purchases for David Hayes but also

for a number of Hong Kong clients, secured a Face Value filly from the Catrail

mare Extravagantly for a session-topping A$120,000 at Adelaide Magic Millions, a

significant result on Face Value's service fee of A$6,600.

Extravagantly is a half-sister to the dam of triple Group 1 winner Bomber

Bill and has proven a handy producer. Her first foal, Miss Lucille (Rory's

Jester), fetched A$240,000 and has two wins from seven appearances to date while

racing in the Arch of Gold syndicate colors made famous by Elvstroem and

Haradasun. Pilkington previously signed for her full-brother, Oh Pickles, for

A$140,000. Prepared by David Hayes, the juvenile won his debut convincingly

before racing on the pace and fading to finish well out of the frame in the Blue

Diamond Prelude (Aus-G3) in his only other appearance.

Mugharreb, another first crop sire, provided the second top price with

Kennewell Racing snaring a half-brother to Adelaide Guineas (Aus-G3) winner

Blahnik (Jeune) for A$110,000.

Figures were down a bit from Monday's opening session and from 2007 figures,

but Magic Millions managing director David Chester said it was unfair to compare

figures.

"This year's catalog is obviously much weaker than usual," Chester said. "EI

(Equine Influenza) created big problems with most interstate vendors not

entering yearlings because of travel restrictions, which continued to well after

the entries closed. A number of the top local yearlings were also interstate at

the time of entry and were picked up by sales in other states, including this

month's Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast.

"For the overall clearance rate to jump to 72 percent was pleasing and that's

the barometer in this case."
