Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners' Feathered (Indian Charlie) had declined from

her smart dirt form as a juvenile in 2014, but a switch to turf worked the

oracle in Friday's $150,000

Edgewood

(G3) at Churchill Downs.

Taking over the role of pacesetter left vacant by the scratch of morning-line

favorite Sunset Glow (Exchange Rate), Feathered broke on top and never looked

back. The 4-1 fourth choice posted slow fractions of :24 1/5, :49 1/5 and 1:13

2/5 on the firm turf before kicking into high gear. Spurting clear into the

stretch through a mile in 1:36 1/5, she used her tactical advantage to the

fullest over 3-2 favorite Quality Rocks (Rock Hard Ten), who could not bridge

the gap.

Feathered crossed the wire a comfortable two-length winner. She returned

$10.40 to win after completing 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.

"Plan A was actually to try and lay off the pace," Pletcher said, "but when

she broke sharp and several others did not, (jockey) Javier (Castellano) called

an audible and it worked out well."

"She broke well out of the gate," Castellano recapped. "I liked the way she

did it today. I know it was her first time on the turf but I knew usually her

best race is when she breaks well out of the gate. I took the pace and she

finished really, really well. She exploded because we were able to relax in the

first part. When I asked her, she took off and she was really impressive the

last part of the race."

Quality Rocks was 2 3/4 lengths to the good of third-placer Lady Zuzu (Dynaformer).

B Rockett (After Market) got up for fourth. French import My Year Is a Day

(King's Best), the 2-1 second choice in her U.S. debut, was rank when held up

off the pace and wound up fifth of seven.

With this first stakes score to her credit, Feathered has compiled a mark of

8-2-2-1, $400,974. The bay was among the top two-year-old fillies last season. A

9 3/4-length maiden winner second time out at Saratoga, she was third in a

sloppy Frizette (G1), a close fourth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1)

and a near-miss second to champion Take Charge Brandi (Giant's Causeway) in the

Starlet (G1). But Feathered didn't build on that resume in her first two outings

this campaign, finishing fourth in a March 6 Gulfstream Park allowance and

seventh in the April 4 Fantasy (G3).

Feathered was a logical candidate to try turf, as a daughter of the

stakes-placed Dynaformer mare Receipt. Her second dam is multiple Grade 1

victress Finder's Fee (Storm Cat). Her third dam, Grade 1 winner Fantastic Find

(Mr. Prospector), is ancestress of such turf veterans as Grade 2 hero T.D. Vance

(Rahy) and multiple Grade 3 victor Optimizer (English Channel), who runs in

Saturday's Woodford Reserve Turf Classic (G1).

"She has the size and shape of a filly that might get over the turf well. And

pedigree like that, it just made sense to run her here," Pletcher said.
